The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the three hundred twenty-one feature films eligible for the 2023 Academy Awards®. There are 265 feature films eligible for consideration in the Best Picture category, which has additional eligibility requirements beyond those for general entry.
Nominations were revealed today for the film and television categories of the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards with American Fiction, May December and Past Lives leading the film nominations with five each.
Neon revealed the official trailer for Eileen, the psychological thriller film starring Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway as two women working at a juvenile detention facility, when their budding friendship takes a twisted turn when one of them reveals a dark secret. The film is based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Ottessa Moshfegh.
NYAD, directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, will open Savannah College of Art and Design’s 26th annual SCAD Savannah Film Festival which returns in person October 21–28, 2023.
The 36th Virginia Film Festival set for October 25-29 announced its lineup with Maestro written, produced, and directed by Bradley Cooper as Opening Night Film. The film focuses on the relationship between Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and his wife Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).
The 12th Annual Montclair Film Festival, taking place October 20-29, in Montclair, NJ kicks off on Friday, October 20 at The Wellmont Theater with Dream Scenario, written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli. In Dream Scenario, Nicolas Cage stars as Paul Matthews, a listless family man and tenured professor with an affinity for evolutionary biology and anxiety regarding his own anonymity. One day, he discovers he has begun to appear in other people’s dreams and he becomes an overnight celebrity, showered with the attention he has long been denied. But when Paul encounters a dreamer whose visions of him differ substantially from the norm, he finds himself grappling with the Faustian bargain of fame. Matthew Heineman’s American Symphony, a documentary about musician Jon Batiste, Robert Kolodny’s The Featherweight and Brooke Berman’s Ramona at Midlife have been added to the main slate of the 24th Woodstock Film Festival taking place September 27 to October 1, 2023.
31st Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF) unveiled the full lineup of films with Bradley Cooper’s Maestro as closing night film along with “A Conversation with…” Series with Paul Simon. Filmmaker Celine Song will also attend the festival for a Special Screening of her latest narrative feature Past Lives, and will receive the festival’s Breakthrough Artist Award.
NewFest, New York’s LGBTQ+ film festival announced its full lineup of 132 films from 26 countries for the 35th milestone anniversary year set for October 12 – 22 in theaters within New York, and virtually throughout the United States on NewFest’s on-demand platform through October 24. The festival’s in-person premieres will take place in Manhattan at SVA Theatre and The LGBT Community Center, and in Brooklyn at Nitehawk Prospect Park and The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM).
