
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced feature films eligible for consideration in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature Film and International Feature Film categories for the 96th Academy Awards®.

Co-directed by Aviva Kempner and Ben West, the documentary Imagining the Indian: The Fight Against Native American Mascoting is a comprehensive examination of the movement to eradicate the words, images, and gestures that many Native Americans and their allies find demeaning and offensive.

Bella!, directed by Jeff L. Lieberman, and Philly on Fire, directed by Ross Hockrow and Tommy Walker are the two winners of the fourth annual Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film. The filmmakers will each receive a $200,000 finishing grant to help with final production and distribution.

The timely documentary Imagining the Indian: The Fight Against Native American Mascoting co-directed by Aviva Kempner and Ben West (Cheyenne) will make its world premiere at California’s American Indian & Indigenous Film Festival. The festival highlights the best of current films from American Indian filmmakers, producers, directors, and actors working through Indian Country. Imagining the Indian will close out the Festival on Sunday, April 3, 2022 with a screening, Q&A, and post-screening reception.

Glimmerglass Film Days in Cooperstown, NY, will present a virtual film festival, complete with filmmaker interviews and panels, from November 5 – 11.

Imagining the Indian, a documentary film currently in production at The Ciesla Foundation about the movement to eradicate Native American names, logos and mascots in the world of sports and beyond, unveiled its trailer and website. The trailer connects the centuries’ old dehumanization of Native Americans to the racism being protested on American streets today.
