Anora and I Saw the TV Glow lead the nominations for the 40th Film Independent Spirit Awards with six each.

Arriving in US theaters this weekend on Friday, October 25th is a diverse lineup of films from award-contenders to a superhero popcorn flick. Alonso Ruizpalacios’ La Cocina shows the nightmare of working in a fine-dining restaurant as an immigrant, starring Oscar-nominated actress Rooney Mara. For the lighthearted films, modern-day Beauty and the Beast, Your Monster, starring Melissa Barrera, and Stavros Halkias-led comedy Let’s Start a Cult are also coming to the big screen. Daisey Ridley-led neo-noir, Magpie, brings suspense to the theaters, and for fans of superhero movies, Venom: The Last Dance closes the Venom trilogy movies.

“La Cocina” directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios won the $20,000 Narrative Feature Grand Prize and “Porcelain War” directed by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev won the $20,000 Documentary Feature Grand Prize at the 33rd Heartland International Film Festival (HIFF).

Cutter Hodierne’s Cold Wallet won Best Narrative Feature award, while Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev’s Porcelain War received the prize for Best Documentary at the inaugural Boise Film Festival.

Based on the 1957 stage play, ‘The Kitchen’ by Arnold Wesker, ‘La Cocina’ is a kitchen drama set in one of the busiest restaurant in Manhattan, New York. The film stars Raúl Briones and two-time Oscar-nominated actress Rooney Mara in its leading role.
