The Alliance of Women Film Journalists today announced the winners of the 2018 AWFJ EDA Awards in 25 categories. In the ‘Best Of’ section, this year’s big winner is “ROMA“, garnering five EDA Awards for Best Film, Best Non-English Language Film, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron.
The National Society of Film Critics which is made up of 60 of the country’s most prominent movie critics, held its 53rd annual awards voting on Saturday, January 5th, 2019, and chose THE RIDER as Best Picture of the Year 2018.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite leads the nominees for the Austin Film Critics Association 2018 film awards with a total of nine nominations including for Best Film. Other nominees for Best Film include Blindspotting, If Beale Street Could Talk, Roma and Suspiria.
As he has done each year since 2015, former President Barack Obama released his favorite movies, songs, and books of the year on Facebook and Instagram. Obama’s taste in movies ranges from the popular Black Panther to some very impressive indie films including Eighth Grade, If Beale Street Could Talk, documentary films – Minding the Gap, Won’t You Be My Neighbor; and foreign films – Roma, Shoplifters.
Yorgos Lanthimos, The Favourite, the dark comedy set in early 18th century England, won the top honor of 2018 Best Picture from the Florida Film Critics Circle.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy The Favourite was out front with 10 nominations for the 39th annual London Critics’ Circle Film Awards, including Film, Director, Screenwriter, Actress for Olivia Colman and Supporting Actress for Rachel Weisz. In addition, the film is nominated for British/Irish Film of the Year.
Roma and The Favourite took home three Kansas City Film Critics Circle’s James Loutzenhiser Awards each, and for the first time since 1992 and the fourth time in the organization’s 53-year history tied for the top prize of Best Film. Roma also won Best Foreign Film and helmer Alfonso Cuarón collected the Robert Altman Award for Best Director.
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has selected Yalitza Aparicio (Roma) Sam Elliott (A Star is Born), Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade) Claire Foy (First Man), Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie (Leave No Trace), John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman) and Steven Yeun (Burning) to receive the 2019 Virtuosos Award at the upcoming 34th edition of the festival.
Sight & Sound, the BFI’s international film magazine, today named Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma as the Best Film of 2018 in one of the most anticipated and respected critics’ opinion poll: Sight & Sound’s Films of the Year. Paul Thomas Anderson’s Oscar®-winning Phantom Thread is in second place, followed by Lee Chang-dong’s Burning in third.
The San Francisco Film Critics Circle named Roma the Best Picture of 2018 along with Best Foreign Language Picture but gave the award for Best Director to Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman. BlacKkKlansman also won the awards for Best Original Score and Best Screenplay, Adapted.
“The Favourite” leads the nominations for the 24th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards this year with 14 nominations including Best Picture, Olivia Colman for Best Actress and Best Actress in a Comedy, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz both for Best Supporting Actress, Best Acting Ensemble, and Yorgos Lanthimos for Best Director.
