The Greater Western New York Film Critics Association’s announced the nominations for the third annual end-of-year Film Awards. Leading the 2020 nominations are Sound of Metal (8 nominations), Nomadland (6 nominations), and Mank, Minari, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, and The Father (5 nominations each).
The Florida Film Critics Circle awarded its 2020 Best Picture prize to First Cow, Kelly Reichardt’s adaptation of Jonathan Raymond’s The Half Life. Los Fuertes, the Chilean drama about young men in love, won the Best Foreign Film category; and You Don’t Nomi, about the filming of the 1995 camp classic Showgirls, won Best Documentary.

“Nomadland” took top honors at the 2020 Indiana Film Journalists Association awards, winning four prizes including Best Picture, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director for Chloé Zhao.
The Chicago Film Critics Association (CFCA) announced their 2020 award winners with the top honors going to Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland, which earned a leading five wins: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Frances McDormand), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography (Joshua James Richards). Never Rarely Sometimes Always earned two awards (Best Original Screenplay, Eliza Hittman; Most Promising Performer, Sidney Flanigan), while the rest of the Association’s honors were awarded to a diverse mix of the year’s best films.

Former President Barack Obama revealed his favorite movies of 2020 which include Nomadland, Bacurau, Boys State, Martin Eden and, Crip Camp, the documentary produced by the Obamas’ company Higher Ground.
The Chicago Film Critics Association (CFCA) announced the nominees for their top film honors of 2020 with Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland leading the field with seven total nominations. Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow and Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things each earned six nominations, while Mank and Promising Young Woman are each recognized with five. Chadwick Boseman posthumously earns dual acting nominations for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods.
The Boston Society of Film Critics picked Nomadland as the best film of 2020, along with Best Director for Chloe Zhao and Best Cinematography for Joshua James Richards. Other 2020 awards went to the Collective for Best Documentary and La Llorona for Best Non-English Language Film.
The new official trailer debuted today for the award winning film Nomadland, an exploration of modern-day van dwelling life on the road, starring Frances McDormand. Searchlight Pictures will release Nomadland on February 19, 2021.
British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) announced the long list for the 2020 Best British Short Film award. The 16 films listed below were chosen from over 300 entries. BIFA also announced this year’s long list in its highly-competitive Best International Independent Film category, and Best Documentary category, celebrating the finest independent films of the year.
Forty-one films and series are nominated for this year for the 30th Annual IFP Gotham Awards, considered one of the leading awards for independent film and signaling the kick-off to the film awards season. Best Feature nominations went to The Assistant, First Cow, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Nomadland, and Relic, becoming the first time all of the best feature nominees are directed by women. In total, eleven competitive awards will be presented to independent features and series.
The Twin Cities Film Fest selected more than 25 finalists for its top awards, and among the 2020 contenders for the top Best Feature Film Award are Darius Marder’s electrifying drummer drama Sound of Metal, Hisonni Johnson’s gritty urban thriller Take Out Girl and Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland.
Festival-goers of the 56th Chicago International Film Festival voted Nomadland the third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, the winner of the Audience Choice Award for Feature Film. The film stars Frances McDormand as Fern who, after the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. Nomadland features real nomads Linda May, Swankie, and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.
