Cinema Tropical announced its annual list of Best Latin American Films of the Year, comprised of 25 Latin American titles from twelve different countries, plus five U.S. Latinx productions—all of them by female directors—that the New York-based organization has selected as the best of the year.
The 2022 AFI Latin American Film Festival will take place in-person September 22 – October 12 at the historic AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring, MD. Now in its 33rd year, the Festival, one of the largest and longest-running showcases of Latin American cinema in the United States, will feature a wide-ranging selection of 41 films from 21 countries.
The 66th BFI London Film Festival (LFF) announced the full program line-up of films, series and immersive art works from over 63 countries with 41% of the program made by female and non-binary directors/creators or co-directors/creators and 34% made by ethnically diverse directors/creators.
Zabaltegi-Tabakalera will showcase 22 films: 13 features, eight shorts and one mid-length movie at the San Sebastian Festival’s 70th edition, including films by Santiago Loza alongside Ruth Beckermann, Lee Chang-dong, Bi Gan, Natalia López Gallardo and Hlynur Pálmason. Film at Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art announced the lineup for 51st edition of New Directors/New Films (ND/NF) taking place April 20–May 1, 2022. This year’s festival will introduce 26 features and 11 shorts, a total of 39 directors, 21 of which are women, to filmgoers in theaters at both FLC and MoMA.
The Jury of the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival headed by M. Night Shyamalan awarded the Golden Bear for Best Film to Alcarrâs directed by Carla Simon. The film tells the story of the Solé family and their peach orchard in Alcarràs, a small village in Spain’s Catalonia region as they they face eviction and an uncertain future.
Eighteen films including one non-fiction and one animation will compete for the Golden and Silver Bears at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival. Seven films were directed by women.
