The Favourite, Yorgos Lanthimos’s black comedy about the 18th century court of Queen Anne, leads the list of nominations for the 2018 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) with 13 noms including Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay. The Favourite also sweeps the technical categories, newly introduced for the 2017 awards, with nominations for seven of the nine awards, including Best Production Design, Best Cinematography supported by Blackmagic Design, Best Make-up & Hair Design and Best Costume Design.
The Best British Independent Film nominees are American Animals – with 11 nominations, Beast – with 10 nominations, Disobedience – with 5 nominations, You Were Never Really Here – with 8 nominations, and The Favourite.
The nominations list demonstrates a record year for female representation, with over 40% of the individual nominations recognizing women in the industry across directing, writing, producing, performance and craft. Female nominees make up over 50% of the talent nominated for Best British Independent Film and dominate both Most Promising Newcomer and Breakthrough Producer supported by Creativity Media, with four out of five nominations for each award. Over 140 British films were submitted for consideration and 37 different British feature films have been nominated across the BIFA categories.

See New Trailer + Poster Debut for THE ESCAPE Starring Gemma Arterton and Dominic Cooper
IFC Films has released the brand new trailer and poster for The Escape, writer/director Dominic Savage’s intelligent, empathetic portrait of a stay-at-home mother in suburban England.
The Escape stars Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace; The Girl With All The Gifts; Their Finest) as a wife held prisoner by the monotony and isolation of her seemingly perfect life and Dominic Cooper (“Preacher;” My Week With Marilyn; An Education) as a husband ill-equipped to understand her pain.
The film, which premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, will be released by IFC Films on Friday, May 11 in New York and Los Angeles, as well as on Digital and On Demand platforms, with a national theatrical rollout to follow.

2017 Toronto International Film Festival Adds More Galas and Special Presentations Films

Six Galas and 32 Special Presentations have been added to the lineup of the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. Audiences can look forward to innovative storytelling from some of the most prominent filmmakers and actors in Canada and around the world.
“We’re thrilled to bring Festival audiences some of the year’s most exciting films in our Gala and Special Presentations lineup,” said Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of TIFF. “But beyond the sizzle of the premieres, this year’s selections show filmmakers continuing to take chances and push boundaries, whether they’re working in Hollywood or Hong Kong, Montreal or Munich.”
This second announcement brings the program’s total to 48 World Premieres, 10 International Premieres, 19 North American Premieres and 10 Canadian Premieres.
The 42nd Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 7 to 17, 2017.
