The Atlanta Film Critics Circle announced their awards for best films and performances of 2020 with director Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland emerging as the number one film. The film also won the award for Best Director for Chloe Zhao and Best Cinematography for Joshua James Richards.
The San Diego Film Critics Society announced the 2020 winners of their annual awards, naming Promising Young Woman as Best Picture along with Best Actress honors for Carey Mulligan for her performance in the films.
Rose Glass’ dramatic horror Saint Maud leads the nominations for the 41st annual London Critics’ Circle Film Awards with 8 nominations, including Film, Director, Screenwriter, Actress (Morfydd Clark) and Supporting Actress (Jennifer Ehle). In addition, the film is nominated for British/Irish Film of the Year, and Clark is nominated for British/Irish Actress, a body-of-work award that includes her appearance in Eternal Beauty.
The Greater Western New York Film Critics Association (GWNYFCA) announced the winners of the third annual end-of-year Film Awards lead by Nomadland with 6 wins including Best Picture, Best Director along with Adapted Screenplay for Chloé Zhao and Best Actress for Frances McDormand.
The Chicago Indie Critics announced their nominees for their fifth annual film awards. Leading all films with an impressive nine nominations is Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom helmed by Best Director nominee George C. Wolfe and starring acting nominees Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis.
The Music City Film Critics Association (MCFCA) – based in Nashville announced their nominees representing the best in film for 2020. Films receiving multiple nominations including for Best Film include Nomadland, Sound of Metal, and The Father.

Leading the 2020 nominations are Sound of Metal (8 nominations), Nomadland (6 nominations), and Mank, Minari, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, and The Father (5 nominations each).
The Florida Film Critics Circle awarded its 2020 Best Picture prize to First Cow, Kelly Reichardt’s adaptation of Jonathan Raymond’s The Half Life. Los Fuertes, the Chilean drama about young men in love, won the Best Foreign Film category; and You Don’t Nomi, about the filming of the 1995 camp classic Showgirls, won Best Documentary.
The Boston Society of Film Critics picked Nomadland as the best film of 2020, along with Best Director for Chloe Zhao and Best Cinematography for Joshua James Richards. Other 2020 awards went to the Collective for Best Documentary and La Llorona for Best Non-English Language Film.
Rose Glass’ sharp and smart psychological horror, Saint Maud leads the nominations for the 2020 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), with 17 nods including Best British Independent Film, Best Screenplay and Best Director, as well as in the debut categories: Breakthrough Producer, Debut Director and Debut Screenwriter. Morfydd Clark is nominated for Best Actress and Jennifer Ehle for Supporting Actress.
The 43rd Mill Valley Film Festival (MVFF43) and the DocLands Documentary Film Festival (which ran in tandem this year) concluded on October 18th after 11 days of virtual and drive-in screenings, panels, and special events.
This year 23rd annual SCAD Savannah Film Festival running as an all-virtual experience October 24 – 31, will screen 148 films, including 20 narrative films, 17 documentary films and 111 shorts, with 14 world premieres, four U.S. premieres and four North American premieres.
