In 1986 Cosa Nostra wiseguy Tommaso Buscetta became a key witness in Italy’s first great Mafia trial, prosecuted by organized crime fighter Giovanni Falcone. Despite the possibility that his entire family might be killed (snitching was treason to the Mafia), prosecutor Falcone made the imprisoned Buscetta an offer he didn’t refuse. In his latest work, award-winning Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio focuses on the story of the first pentito, who helped bring 300 Mafia leaders to justice while uncovering ties to political circles. More than just a biopic, Bellocchio’s film recently represented Italy in competition at Cannes.
