Giving Voice is the winner of the Festival Favorite Award, selected by audience votes from the 128 features screened at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, which took place in Park City, Salt Lake City, and Sundance, Utah, from January 23 February 2, 2020.
The Burnt Orange Heresy, the fifth screen adaptation of the works of late Miami noir novelist Charles Willeford, starring Mick Jagger, Donald Sutherland, Elizabeth Debicki and Claes Bang, will open the 37th edition of Miami Dade College (MDC)’s acclaimed Miami Film Festival, on Friday, March 6 at downtown Miami’s historic Olympia Theater.

The first abstract artist was a woman – Hilma af Klint. Zeitgeist Films in association with Kino Lorber will release Beyond the Visible – Hilma af Klint, a documentary film directed by Halina Dyrschka. The film will open at The Metrograph in New York City on April 10th, other cities will follow.
At tonight’s 2020 (EE British Academy Film) BAFTA Awards, 1917 won seven awards including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, with Sam Mendes receiving the BAFTA for Director.

The 2020 Sundance Film Festival’s Awards Ceremony took place last night, with top awards – Grand Jury Prizes awarded to Minari for U.S. Dramatic, Boys State for U.S. Documentary, Epicentro for World Cinema Documentary and Yalda, a Night for Forgiveness for World Cinema Dramatic.
Film Movement release the official trailer for The Wild Goose Lake, the noir crime thriller from director Diao Yinan (Black Coal, Thin Ice). The Wild Goose Lake which premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival is billed as the follow-up to Yinan’s Black Coal, Thin Ice – winner of the Golden Bear at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival. Featuring gorgeous, neon-drenched cinematography and bursts of shocking, expertly choreographed action; and starring Hu Ge, Gwei Lun Mei, Liao Fan, Wan Qian, Qi Dao, the film will open in select theaters on March 6th, 2020.
Bong Joon Ho’s darkcomedy Parasite came out on top at the 40th London Critics’ Circle Film Awards, winning Film of the Year and Director of the Year for Bong. The Souvenir, Joanna Hogg’s bittersweet 1980s memoir was named British/Irish Film of the Year and its 22-year-old leading lady Honor Swinton Byrne received the Young British/Irish Performer award.

HBO has acquired worldwide television and streaming rights to the documentary feature film Siempre, Luis, directed by John James which had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

Princess of the Row by award winning filmmaker Maximilian Carlson will open the eighth edition of the Toronto Black Film Festival – TBFF on Wednesday, February 12 – 7PM at Isabel Bader Theatre. In 2019, Princess of the Row won 19 awards at 20 film festivals: 4 Audience Choice, 5 Best Feature, 6 Best Actress (Tayler Buck), 3 Best Actor (Edi Gathegi) and 1 Best Cinematography (Maz Makhani). The festival will close with the documentary Restless directed by Bernard Attal.

Chinese filmmaker Zheng Lu Xinyuan won the Tiger Award at the 49th International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) for her film The Cloud in Her Room. In her personal debut film, shot in black-and-white, filmmaker Zheng Lu Xinyuan follows 22-year-old Muzi as she returns to Hangzhou, where she was born, for the New Year’s celebration. However, it’s like she doesn’t really fit in anywhere.
IFC Films released a new trailer for the provocative psychological indie thriller Swallow, starring Haley Bennett as pregnant housewife Hunter who suddenly develops a case of pica – a psychological disorder involving the desire to consume inedible objects. The film from writer/director Carlo Mirabella-Davis (The Swell Season), and starring Austin Stowell, Elizabeth Marvel, David Rasche, Luna Lauren Velez, Zabryna Guevara, along with Denis O’Hare premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival. Swallow will be released in select theaters on March 13th, 2020.
