This year’s Portland International Film Festival (PIFF) cut short due to the pandemic in early March will finally wrap up six months later – with new event titled PIFF 2.0. From October 1 to 3, 2020, PIFF 2.0, reimagining the final days of the 43rd Portland International Film Festival, will present 10 films, talks and happy hours from Northwest and International filmmakers, offered in virtual screening and events as well as in new additions to the Film Center’s popular Cinema Unbound Drive-In series.

The 62^nd Lübeck Nordic Film Days (Nordische Filmtage Lübeck) taking place November 4 – 08, 2020, will dedicate this year’s Retrospective to “Fishermen’s Films – Fishing in Nordic and Baltic Cinema”. Curator Jörg Schöning focussed this year’s selection on narrative and documentary films made between 1912 and 2019 that shine a spotlight on a profession that is part idyll, part commercial venture. This brings to a conclusion the section’s Baltic cycle, begun in 2018 with “Baltic Transfer” and continued in 2019 with “Undercover North/Northeast”.

Directed by BAFTA award-winner Daniel Gordon (“Hillsborough,” “George Best: All By Himself”) and produced by Academy Award-winner John Battsek (“Searching for Sugarman,” “One Day in September”), the documentary tells the story of the South African Paralympic sprinter and international hero, who had inspired millions with his determination and dedication – and who was then suddenly at the center of a murder investigation. The circus that surrounded a tragic death became just as much a story of the time as his initial rise to glory.
