Dark Star Pictures will release Angelfish, a New York based coming-of-age romance starring Princess Nokia in her feature film debut. Written and directed by Peter Lee, Angelfish tells the story of Brendan (Jimi Stanton), a high school drop out with a complicated family living in the Bronx who meets Eva (Princess Nokia), a young woman who’s on her own journey of self-discovery. The film follows the young couple’s relationship as they try to navigate their lives and future together.
Princess Nokia most recently released “Sugar Honey Iced Tea (S.H.I.T.)”, a rigorous, raw, and honest song. Rolling Stone praised the “biting” new track and Vogue called the accompanying video “stunning [and] provocative.” Earlier this spring, The New York Times Magazine spotlighted Princess Nokia as one of 12 performers to watch this year.
Angelfish will be released on iTunes, Amazon, Fandango Now, Vudu and Xbox on November 19. The film will have its world premiere at the historic United Palace Theatre in Washington Heights, NY on November 14 ahead of its digital release. The near century old theater was recently updated in part by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Tickets are available.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Dark Star to release the film domestically and in such a unique way,” said writer/director Peter Lee. “To premiere the movie in such an iconic New York landmark and have the premiere open to the public, the people we made the movie for and about – it’s a dream come true.”
“I loved sharing this experience with Peter Lee and the incredible team of women who made this film possible,” said Princess Nokia. “I’m really grateful to have someone believe in me so much, and believe in this talent — not just my name or the idea of me. He respected me, he respected New York and the importance of bringing these Latino characters alive respectively and accurately. Which has truly meant the world to me.”
Directed by Peter Lee, Angelfish, a Screen Thirteen, Black 26 Pictures, and Muse Work Pictures production, was produced by Robin Rose Singer, Rabia Sultana, Ricardo Vilar and Peter Lee. Executive Producers are Ruth Lapin, Brent Finley, Robert I. Levine, Lawrence Gillet and Princess Nokia.
Princess Nokia makes her stunning feature debut with a breakout performance as Eva, alongside an incredible performance of Jimi Stanton (The Punisher, Greyhound) as Brendan. The film also stars Erin Davie (King Jack), Rosie Berrido (Friendship) and Stanley Simons (Two Sentence Horror Stories).
