At the annual San Diego Comic-Con, Vyjayanthi Movies revealed the first look teaser for Kalki 2898-AD, originally titled Project K,the sci-fi epic film billed as India’s most ambitious cinematic universe yet with the captivating storytelling, futuristic setting, and “Spice Punk” aesthetic inspired by the film..
It is estimated to be produced at a budget of US$75 million, making it one of the most expensive Indian films ever made.
Directed by Nag Ashwin(Mahanati, Yevade Subramanyam), the film stars some of India’s biggest actors, Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani.
“We are thrilled to present Project K’s debut at San Diego Comic-Con,” said Nag Ashwin. “India’s storytelling tradition has ancient roots, with its epics serving as the origins for many civilizations worldwide. A world as big as this needs a platform as big to introduce it to the people. Comic-Con felt like the perfect place, where the honesty and enthusiasm needed for Project K will be found.”
Nag Ashwin Reddy is an Indian film director and screenwriter known for his works in Telugu cinema. He made his directorial debut in 2015 with the coming-of-age philosophical drama film Yevade Subramanyam. In 2018, he directed the biographical film Mahanati, starring Keerthy Suresh as yesteryear actress Savitri. At the 66th National Film Awards 2019, the film won accolades including the Best Feature Film in Telugu. Nag Ashwin received the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Telugu at the 66th Filmfare Awards South. Mahanati was showcased in the Indian Panorama Mainstream section at the 49th International Film Festival of India, and has also garnered the “Equality in Cinema Award” at the 2018 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.
Not much is know about the storyline, but speaking about the movie, Nag Ashwin once said, “I’m very excited to see Deepika play this character. It is something no mainstream lead has done before and will be quite a surprise for everyone. The pairing of Deepika and Prabhas will be one of the main highlights of the film and the story between them, I believe will be something audiences will carry in their hearts for years to come.”
After delays due the COVID-19 pandemic and production works, Kalki 2898 AD is scheduled to be open in cinemas on 12 January 2024, in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and English languages.
