Magnet Releasing revealed the official trailer for Sister Midnight, the Mumbai-set oddball comedy horror film starring Radhika Apte as a woman who is trapped in an unhappy arranged marriage.
Also starring in the movie are Ashok Pathak, Chhaya Kadam, and Smita Tambe.
The film world-premiered in Cannes’ Directors Fortnight and won the award for Best Film in the Next Wave section at Fantastic Fest. It was nominated at the 2025 BAFTA Awards for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.
Written and directed by London based Indian artist and filmmaker Karan Kandhari, making her directorial debut, Sister Midnight opens in U.S. theaters in May 2025
In Sister Midnight, rebellious small-town misfit Uma (acclaimed Indian actress Radhika Apte) arrives in Mumbai to find herself totally unsuited to life as a housewife. At odds with her prying neighbors and under the constant oppressive noise and heat of the city, she decides to break free from the shackles of domesticity and follow her own path in this bold, unpredictable, and darkly funny debut.
Featuring an eclectic soundtrack (Interpol frontman Paul Banks makes his debut as composer) and singular visual aesthetic.
In their review Loud and Clear described the movie as “bold, quirky, often hilarious” giving much of the credit to Radhika Apte performance as Uma, writing, “As Uma, Radhika Apte is superb. The film wouldn’t have worked without a believable protagonist, and Apte pretty much carries the entire movie on her shoulders for most of its runtime. Not only that, but she manages to be both grounded and over the top, in a way that makes us empathize with Uma despite how different her world is from our own reality. Her comedic timing is excellent, and her reactions to the crazy things happening to her make Sister Midnight highly entertaining film.”
