Sci-fi ‘Lesbian Space Princess’ Trailer Goes on a Wild Intergalactic Journey

Lesbian Space Princess is a colorful and witty animated queer sci-fi comedy film that follows Saira, voiced by Shabana Azeez (known for her role on The Pitt), in an intergalactic journey to save her ex-girlfriend, Kiki, voiced by Bernie Van Tiel, from the Straight White Maliens.

Other voice cast members include Gemma Chua Tran, Aunty Donna, Richard Roxburgh, Kween Kong, Jordan Raskopolous, and Madeline Sami.

Directed and written by Leela Varghese and Emma Hough Hobbes, Lesbian Space Princess made its world premiere at the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Teddy award for best queer feature, and it opens in select U.S theaters on October 31st, 2025.

In the film, when an introverted princess is forced out of her comfort zone, she finds herself on a wild intergalactic journey filled with drag queens, pop stars, and problematic spaceships.

Daughter to the flamboyant lesbian Queens of Planet Clitopolis, introverted Princess Saira is devastated when her bounty-hunter girlfriend, Kiki, suddenly breaks up with her for being too needy. After Kiki is kidnapped by forgotten incels of the future, the Straight White Maliens, Saira must leave the comforts of gay space to deliver their ransom: her royal labrys (the most powerful weapon known to lesbian kind). Only problem is… she doesn’t have it! With just a 24-hour window to get her labrys and save Kiki, Princess Saira finds herself on an inter-gay-lactic journey of self-discovery that includes encounters with a problematic spaceship and a new-found friendship with gay-pop runaway Willow.

The film is visually inspired by cartoons such as Adventure Time and Invader Zim, and anime like Revolutionary Girl Utena.

In an interview conducted by Alaisdair Leith & Adam Ross for Novastream, Hobbs said, “Animation is such a powerful medium. To see queer audiences embrace it this way makes me believe in the future of Australian animation more than ever.”

In an interview with James Kleinmann for The Queer Review, Varghese said, “I didn’t really see myself in anything growing up, especially when it came to queer comedy, which is partly why we made this film.”

Carlos Aguilar, in a review for Variety, states, “The intention, for the most part is to imagine what queer narratives can become when not tied to how they fit into heteronormative systems.”

In another review, David Opie, writer for IndieWire, said, “It’s a story about loving yourself, or at least learning to love yourself, which is very much needed in this day and age.”
