Siobhan McCarthy’s ‘She’s the He’ Offers Trans Representation In a Joyful Way

She’s the He is a hilarious, subversive gender-bent comedy film that tells you to forget the days of “She’s the Man” and welcome in an era of inclusive trans representation.

In an attempt to dispel a rumor that they are gay lovers, Ethan, played by Misha Osherovich, and Alex, played by Nico Carney, pretend to identify as transgender women. All while Alex tries to win the heart of his long-time crush, Sasha, played by Malia Pyles.

Other cast members include Suzanne Cryer, Mark Indelicato, Emmett Preciado, Tatiana Ringsby, Aparna Nancherla, and Kyle Butenhoff.

Directed by Siobhan McCarthy, She’s the He will make its international debut at the BFI London Film Festival

When high-schooler Alex convinces his best friend Ethan that they should pretend to be trans to hook up with girls, Ethan makes a startling discovery: She isn’t pretending. Now Alex and Ethan must reckon with their changing friendship and the messy process of coming out.

In an interview for Eye For Film, McCarthy says, “The whole movie, the entire goal of this film, at its core, came out of a deep desire to provide trans kids with a sense of joy and a sense of belonging, to create a movie about transness that was filled to the brim with joy.

They continued, “ Because a lot of trans representation up until this point has acknowledged both dysphoria and also a lot of the oppressive forces that are upon the trans community.”
