Written and directed by award winning filmmaker Theresa Demarest, the documentary Throw Away Horses exposes the dark truth of the horse racing industry and the treatment of its horses.
Through powerful storytelling and firsthand accounts, the film sheds light on the harsh realities faced by retired and injured racehorses, challenging audiences to confront the cost of entertainment and profit in the sport.
The film will make its LA debut at the 21st Annual La Femme International Film FestivalLA Femme International Film Festival (LAFIFF) on October 18 and will screen at the Awareness festival the following week.

Throw Away Horses follows the journey of racehorses and working horses that are abandoned or neglected once they are no longer seen as valuable. The film highlights the efforts of rescuers and advocacy groups working to save and rehabilitate these animals, offering a glimpse into the dedication required to protect them.
The documentary exposes the broader consequences of an industry driven by profit, revealing the abuse behind the spectacle of horse racing.
In a recent interview, Demarest said, “The average person doesn’t know what’s going on with horses. There are cat and dog hoarders, there are horse hoarders. There are people who can buy a racehorse at the race track for a dollar.”
According to the documentary’s official website, the film “sheds light on the thousands of horses that get caught every year in a trap of human neglect, despair, and greed. From the horse racing industry to large and small breeders, down to the individual owner, when a horse is seen as merely a tool or commodity, there is little legal protection or resources for the unwanted horse.”
