Oscars Reveals Shortlist in Feature Film, Short Film and More Categories

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the shortlists in 12 categories for the 98th Academy Awards.

Categories include Animated Short Film, Casting, Cinematography, Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Live Action Short Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Sound and Visual Effects.

15 films will advance in the Animated Short Film category; 10 films will advance in the Casting category; 16 films will advance in the Cinematography category; 15 films will advance in the Documentary Feature Film category; 15 films will advance in the Documentary Short Film category; 15 films will advance in the International Feature Film category; 15 films will advance in the Live Action Short Film category; 10 films will advance in the Makeup and Hairstyling category; 20 scores will advance in the Original Score category; 15 songs will advance in the Original Song category; 10 films will advance in the Sound category; and 10 films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category.

In total, 24 categories will be awarded at the 98th Oscars. Each category has five nominees, except for Best Picture, which has 10.

Nominations voting begins on Monday, January 12, 2026, and concludes on Friday, January 16, 2026.

Nominations for the 98th Academy Awards will be announced on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

The 98th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide
