Co-directed by acclaimed documentarian Marah Strauch and first-time feature director Bryce Leavitt, Space Cowboy premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. Since then, the film has screened at numerous festivals, including the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival 2024, where it opened the event as a gala presentation. It is set to open in theaters beginning with a weeklong engagement at the Laemmle Royal in Los Angeles on February 27, 2026, followed by additional showings in New York City and across the country.

Here is the official synopsis of Space Cowboy: Joe Jennings, an innovator in the world of skydiving, has spent decades capturing breathtaking aerial moments with his camera for extreme sports competitions, Super Bowl commercials, and Hollywood blockbusters. Driven by a passion for “camera flying” in his youth, Joe cultivated a deep friendship with fellow skydiver Rob Harris, partnering to become one of the most influential skysurfing teams in history. After triumphs and tragedy, including the loss of his partner, Joe continues to push the boundaries of aerial cinematography and skydiving, finding solace in the clouds while grappling with grief and forging new dreams. Now in his sixties, he prepares to take on his most audacious challenge yet—elevating his art with a daring “flying car” stunt that defies gravity and expectations.
Director Marah Strauch has reflected on what drew her to this remarkable true story, emphasizing the emotional depth behind the daring feats. Strauch explained that what resonated most with her was the full spectrum of Joe’s experience, from jubilant highs to deeply personal lows, because “Life isn’t just a drudgery of sadness, and it’s also not just this huge explosion of happiness at all times. I think in making films that reflect life, which are documentaries, you really want that kind of salty and sweet kind of sense of joy and sorrow, because that’s being alive.”
In a review for POV Magazine, the film was praised for its “edge-your-seat adrenaline” while also digging into the personal impact of risk and loss, observing that director Marah Strauch and co-director Bryce Leavitt “once again tell the story of a daredevil who attempts to defy gravity” in a way that makes the skydiver’s exploits relatable and deeply human.
