Two estranged siblings chase buried loot and fractured identities in The Last Viking, a darkly comic odyssey from filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen
The film reunites the acclaimed auteur with longtime collaborators Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas for a wildly offbeat story.
Also starring in the film are Sofie Gråbøl, Søren Malling, Bodil Jørgensen, Lars Brygmann, Kardo Razzazi, Nicolas Bro, and Peter Düring.
The Last Viking made its world premiere out of competition at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival, followed by the Toronto International Film Festival, and other festivals.
Following its European release, the film is set to open in US theaters and on digital on May 29 via Samuel Goldwyn Films.

Here is the story: Before serving a long prison sentence for a bank robbery, Anker entrusts his brother with hiding the stolen money. Years later, upon his release, he discovers that his brother has developed dissociative identity disorder and can no longer remember where the loot is buried. As the two embark on a strange and often dangerous journey to recover the money, they are forced to confront their past and their fragile bond.
Writing for ScreenAnarchy, critic Kurt Halfyard described it as “magnificently absurd” writing, “The Last Viking is one of Jensen’s best films in years. The magic sauce is that everyone is crazy here, which makes everyone kind of sweetly sane, within the confines of the film’s curated reality.”
