John Early steps into the spotlight in a big way with Maddie’s Secret, a comedy melodrama blending absurd humor, emotional vulnerability, and biting satire into one cinematic piece.
Written, directed by, and starring John Early in his feature directorial debut, the film follows Maddie Ralph, a food content company dishwasher whose rise to internet fame forces her to confront a deeply personal struggle hiding beneath her perfectly curated persona.
Alongside Early, the ensemble cast includes Kate Berlant, Eric Rahill, Conner O’Malley, Claudia O’Doherty, Vanessa Bayer, and Kristen Johnston.
The independent film first premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it screened in the Discovery section, followed by New Directors/New Films, Milwaukee Film Festival, and IFF Boston.
Magnolia Pictures will release the film in theaters starting in New York at the IFC Center on June 19th, followed by a Los Angeles rollout on June 26, with additional cities to follow.

In its review, ScreenRant described the film as “a born-to-be-divisive comedy with a deeply emotional core”. The review, written by Graeme Guttmann, noted, “While Early’s comedic sensibilities may speak to a very specific audience, the story at its center is universal, beautiful in the way many films strive to be, all while making you laugh harder than you will at any other movie in recent memory.”
