Netflix debuted the official trailer for Possible Love, the new drama from South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong, his first feature since 2018’s Burning.
The film was recently announced as South Korea’s official selection for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.
Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong star as two married couples whose lives begin to intertwine after a documentary filmmaker decides to make a film about laid-off workers.
As professional curiosity turns into a deeper personal connection, Lee’s latest film promises another layered examination of relationships, social class and the complicated emotions that exist beneath everyday life.
Possible Love is set for a major international festival run, beginning with its world premiere in Competition at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The film will then head to the Toronto International Film Festival, where it has been selected for Special Presentations, followed by a U.S. premiere in the Main Slate of the 64th New York Film Festival. It is also scheduled to screen in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section of the San Sebastián International Film Festival, the Gala Premiere section of the Zurich Film Festival and Special Presentations at the Vancouver International Film Festival.
Following the festival run, Possible Love will arrive in select theaters on October 23, followed by its global Netflix release on November 6.
Here is the synopsis: Possible Love follows laid-off worker Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu) and his wife Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon), whose lives intersect with Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), a documentary filmmaker, and her affluent husband Sang-woo (Zo In-sung). Ye-ji plans to make a documentary about laid-off workers, bringing the two couples into closer contact. As their lives become increasingly intertwined, the relationships expose hidden desires and tensions.
“I’m not the type of filmmaker who can make movies easily,” says Lee. “Before I begin a film, I must be certain of what it means — to me, to the audience, and to cinema itself. That is why Possible Love took so long to make.”
