New York Film Festival Adds World Premieres of Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Artificial’ and Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall’

The world premieres of Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall have been added to the lineup of the 64th New York Film Festival set to take place from September 25 through October 12, 2026.

Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial has been added to the Main Slate, with the world premiere taking place on October 5 at Alice Tully Hall with Guadagnino and members of the cast in attendance.

The stakes couldn’t be higher in Luca Guadagnino’s thrilling, funny, and very human Artificial, a drama of immense moral urgency that propels the viewer through the two decades of machine learning research and technocratic recklessness that have brought us to our current AI crisis point. In 2003, Soviet-born computer scientist Ilya Sutskever (Yura Borisov) began studying artificial neural networks under University of Toronto professor Geoffrey “Godfather of AI” Hinton (Mark Rylance). A decade later, while employed by Google, Sutskever fatefully crosses paths with a young entrepreneur named Sam Altman (Andrew Garfield), the eventual co-founder and CEO of OpenAI.

The film is anchored by lead performances by Garfield and Borisov, with a supporting cast, including Rylance, Monica Barbaro, Cooper Hoffman, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Schwartzman, and Chris O’Dowd, and original songs and score by Damon Albarn.

NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim stated, “The most remarkable thing about Luca Guadagnino’s sly and sobering new film is that it finds the perfect tone to tell the story of how we arrived at the AI precipice. Thomas Anderson’s Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall has been added to the Spotlight section, with the world premiere taking place on October 1 at Alice Tully Hall on 35mm with Paul Thomas Anderson and Cameron Winter in attendance.

Even for those who already admired the talents of Brooklyn’s own Cameron Winter, both as a solo artist and as the front man of the band Geese, his performance at Carnegie Hall on December 11, 2025, was a revelation. A stripped-down set in which he accompanied himself on a Steinway grand, the show cemented Winter’s status as a one-of-a-kind cabaret art-pop balladeer, his soaring vibrato resonating throughout a theater known for its legendary acoustics. Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson was there with a crew, including his Licorice Pizza collaborator Benny Safdie, to capture this major star-is-born moment, and the result is a smashing cinematic concert, shot on 16mm and 35mm with a perfect mix of intimate images of Winter and of the cavernous space, keyed into the singer-songwriter’s effortless combination of bravado and sensitivity, darkness and light.
