At the center of the story is Amy, a government child protection worker whose personal life takes an unexpected turn after the end of a relationship. She moves back in with her longtime friend Rosie, a social services officer whose job brings her face-to-face with anger, frustration, and people in difficult circumstances. While the two women find companionship and support in their renewed living arrangement, Amy’s aging parents, Birdie and Geoff, are confronting challenges of their own. When Geoff begins experiencing health problems, the family must navigate the emotional realities of aging, illness, and the changing responsibilities that come with caring for someone they love.
