Synopsis

Divine G (Colman Domingo), imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group alongside other incarcerated men, including a wary newcomer (Clarence Maclin), in this stirring true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art, starring an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors.

Reviews

Calling the film ‘a sincere story of friendship and artistic expression at Sing Sing’ in their review, The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “Using a mix of professional actors and alumni from the program, Kwedar chronicles the experiences of a group of incarcerated men preparing to stage a new and ambitious production. Sing Sing doesn’t set out to be an overtly political film, but its sensitive approach to portraying the lives of its characters makes it an urgent document of our time.”

It continued, “Domingo shines, proving himself once again as an actor of wide range and deep feeling. As Divine Eye’s mentor, he channels the tough paternal energy he displayed in Euphoria in the role of Rue’s Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor.”

Deadline review pegged it as an ‘ode to humanity’ writing, “Sing Sing presents a vibrant tapestry, highlighting the lighter moments in the otherwise shadowed confines of incarceration. At the heart of this the RTA program. An oasis in the desert of the penal system, it illuminates the film’s central theme: that even behind bars, the spirit can soar, uninhibited, into the expanses of imagination and creativity.”
