Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, The Lost Daughter which premiered earlier this year at the Venice Film Festival will be released in select theaters on December 17, 2021 and Netflix on December 31, 2021.

The film, adapted from best-selling author Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, stars Academy Award and Emmy Award winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Crown), Jessie Buckley (I’m Thinking Of Ending Things), Dakota Johnson (A Bigger Splash, The High Note), Peter Sarsgaard (Jackie), Paul Mescal (Normal People), Oliver Jackson-cohen (The Invisible Man) and Ed Harris (Westworld), Dagmara Domińczyk (Succession).

In the film, a woman’s beach vacation takes a dark turn when she begins to confront the troubles of her past.

Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda (Olivia Colman) becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood. An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences.
