Waste Land The Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) announced the closing film for its 13th edition. Directed by Lucy Walker, Waste Land has won the Audience Award in Sundance and the Amnesty International and Panoramic Audience Award at the Berlinale.

Les Fros will be the opening film of this year’s Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM)
The grand premiere of Les Fros, the second feature by the Mont Laurier-based director Stéphanie Lanthier, kicks off the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) on November 10.
Produced by DOC Productions and co-produced by the National Film Board of Canada, Les Fros takes us inside the world of Abitibi’s brush cutters. Every year, workers from Romania, Mali, Russia and Albania travel north to swell the ranks of local cutters. For long months, they toil in harsh conditions deep in the boreal forest, creating a warm and brotherly community despite their differences and tensions. This is the tender and tough reality that Stéphanie Lanthier has chosen to share with us by filming the daily lives of these new lumberjacks.

Gallaudet University in DC Hosts WORLDEAF Cinema Festival
The nominations are in for WORLDEAF Cinema Festival’s (WDCF) filmmaker award competition taking place Nov. 4 through 7 at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Out of a staggering 173 submissions from 132 filmmakers from 30 countries, the 11-member judging committee has selected 17 films from seven countries. A complete list of the nominated films is below.
Films were submitted in five professional categories, including Best Narrative, Best Documentary, Best Short, Best Mini-15 and Best Film about the Deaf Experience by a Hearing Filmmaker. The selection reflects the wide variety of subject matter and storylines created by deaf and hard-of-hearing filmmakers as well as hearing filmmakers. From works just nine minutes long to full-length narratives, the nominated films depict fiction and non-fiction stories, not just about deaf culture and topics, but the overall human experience.

Backcountry Film Festival Comes To Boise
Deeper from Teton Gravity Research The Backcountry Film Festival makes a stop in Boise this week, November 4, 2010. Included in the lineup is Deeper from Teton Gravity Research. It won Best of Festival and features boarder Jeremy Jones in a quest for untouched terrain. Other highlights include Best Short Film Desert River from Sweetgrass Productions and Whiteback Warrior from TreeFight and Snaz Media about the decline of whitebark pines due to climate change and what’s being done to save these iconic alpine trees. Whiteback Warrior won Best Environmental Film.

Since its establishment, The Other Israel Film Festival showcases the diversity of Israeli life with award-winning films and open discussions on the margins of Israeli society that is rarely seen by the mainstream, let alone presented to American audiences. Among those are the country’s Arab population (Christian, Muslim, Bedouin and Druze) that makes up 20% of Israel’s population, as well as migrant workers, immigrants and more.

CMJIFF (CMJ International Film Festival) in New York City
Taipei Exchanges CMJ and Little W will present the inaugural CMJIFF (CMJ International Film Festival). The festival will present six films shot on four continents and in languages as diverse as Mandarin, Mongolian, French, German and Lingala. Screenings will take place at Clearview Cinemas, NYU Cantor Film Center and the Florence Gould Hall on October 20 and 21.
