The Berlinale is a unique place of artistic exploration and entertainment. It is one of the largest public film festivals in the world, attracting tens of thousands of visitors from around the globe each year. For the film industry and the media, the eleven days in February are also one of the most important events in the annual calendar and an indispensable trading forum.
The Berlin International Film Festival enjoys an eventful history. The festival was created for the Berlin public in 1951, at the beginning of the Cold War, as a “showcase of the free world”. Shaped by the turbulent post-war period and the unique situation of a divided city, the Berlinale has developed into a place of intercultural exchange and a platform for the critical cinematic exploration of social issues. To this day it is considered the most political of all the major film festivals.

On the final evening of Perspektive Deutsches Kino at 2019 Berlin International Film Festival, the Compass-Perspektive-Award 2019 for the best film was presented to the film Born in Evin by Maryam Zaree. The award is endowed with prize money, and as a trophy, the director received a real compass, which is intended to serve as symbolic orientation and show her the direction to take going into the future.

The 21st Panorama Audience Awards of the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival went to 37 Seconds for best fiction film and Talking About Trees for best documentary. The awards are presented by the Berlinale Panorama section.

A Colony (Une colonie) by Geneviève Dulude-De Celles of Canada was awarded the Crystal Bear for the Best Film in Generation Kplus by the Children’s Jury at the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival. The Grand Prix of the Generation Kplus International Jury for the Best Feature Film went to A First Farewell (Di yi ci de li bie) by Wang Lina, People’s Republic of China.

In a statement released today, the Berlin International Film Festival announced that due to technical difficulties encountered during post-production, Yi miao zhong (One Second) by Zhang Yimou unfortunately will not be presented on February 15 in the scope of the Competition section of the Berlinale. The Berlin International Film Festival has stated that the objectives of the Forum program have always included the idea of looking at film history from the point of view of contemporary cinema. The 49th edition of Forum as part of the Berlin International Film Festival will consists of 39 films, 31 of which world premieres. The festival notes, that the Forum 2019 main program doesn’t consider itself some sort of ‘best of’ list, but rather gathers together a selection of films that try things out, take a stance and refuse to compromise.
