Qiu Jiongjiong’s A New Old Play from China – a fascinating tale of a family of Sichuan Opera artists living through a tumultuous era – has been named Best Film for the Young Cinema Competition (Chinese Language) at the 46th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF46). Besides winning the Firebird Award, A New Old Play was also the pick of the FIPRESCI Prize jury, who commended the film for “its masterful approach and inventive visual style.”
Five world premieres will make up the Culinary Zinema section at the 70th San Sebastian Festival, which opens with Mibu. The Moon on a Dish (Mibu. La luna en un plato), taking an in-depth look at the famous Japanese restaurant. Virgilio, a portrait of the chef at the restaurant in Lima, Central, will close the section also including a third documentary, La Huella, historia de un parador de playa, and two fictions, Xiao shan he (Nostalgia) and The Zen Diary (Tsuchi wo kurau junikagetsu).
Writer-director Jordan Peele’s Nope has been added to the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival lineup as a special screening. Nope will screen as a special IMAX® presentation at the Cinesphere Theatre at Ontario Place, which has the distinction of being the world’s first permanent IMAX® theatre. Following the screening, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey will lead an engaging Q&A session with Jordan Peele.
Thirteen feature films will be showcased in Made in Spain, the non-competitive section for a selection of the year’s Spanish films at the 70th edition of San Sebastian Festival.
Michelle Yeoh will receive the inaugural TIFF Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award presented by BVLGARI at TIFF Tribute Awards during the 47th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival.
Tallgrass Film Festival celebrate its 20th Anniversary on September 28-October 2, with a lineup including 53 features and 14 short film programs with 195 films; opening with Ravi Kapoor’s Four Samosas, joining the other gala presentations, which include the world premiere of Daniel Fetherston and Danny Szlauderbach’s, We Were Famous, You Don’t Remember: The Embarrassment, Bryan Darling and Jesse Finley Reed’s All Man: The International Male Story, Bradford Thomason and Brett Whitcomb’s Butterfly in the Sky, and Camille Hardman and Gary Lane’s Still Working 9 to 5.
3rd i’s 20th Annual San Francisco International South Asian Film Festival: Bollywood and Beyond (SFISAFF) will take place at the Roxie and Castro theaters in San Francisco from September 23-25!
Seventeen films – thirteen features and four shorts – make up the Basque participation at San Sebastian Festival’s 70th edition. Zinemira, the section specifically dedicated to Basque cinema at San Sebastian Festival will showcase seven fictions and non-fictions. A total of ten films, four of these, being a world premiere at the Festival, will compete for the Irizar Basque Film Award alongside another six works screening in other Festival sections.
The Mill Valley Film Festival will honor writer, director Nikyatu Jusu with a Spotlight program including a special onstage conversation, screening of the 2022 Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner and first feature Nanny, and the MVFF Award for Feature Debut.
Rapper Machine Gun Kelly presents the drama Taurus, in which he himself embodies a music star, and executive producer Roland Emmerich’s team will present the world premiere of the modern Mozart film adaptation The Magic Flute in the new “Sounds” section of the 18th Zurich Film Festival (Sept 22 – Oct 2) screening music films and events with musicians.
