The Whale is the winner of the Miami Film Festival’s Miami GEMS 2022 Audience Award. The film, directed by Darren Aronofsky, tells the story of a reclusive English teacher (Brendan Fraser), who is living with severe obesity, seeks to reconnect with his teenage daughter (Sadie Sink) for one last chance at redemption. MFF’s annual fall event took place from November 3-10 at MDC’s Tower Theater Miami.

At its 52nd edition, International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) will celebrate radical filmmakers and visual artists including Hungarian filmmaker Judit Elek, Japanese animator Yuasa Masaaki,and American interdisciplinary artist Stanya Kahn. The festival also revealed the first titles in Harbour, the festival’s largest and broadest program.

Inspired by real events, the drama film On Sacred Ground is set amidst a confrontation around an oil pipeline that is being built at the Standing Rock Native American Reservation. The film stars William Mapother, Amy Smart, Mariel Hemingway, David Arquette, Irene Bedard, Kerry Knuppe, David Midthunder, Che Jim, James Kyson, and Frances Fisher.

Directed by Valerie Kontakos, the documentary Queen of the Deuce tells the story of Chelly Wilson, entrepreneur, and Holocaust escapist who built an empire in the Times Square pornography circuit in the 1970s. The film world premieres at DOC NYC on November 11, 2022.

The Coronado Island Film Festival taking place November 10-13, 2022 in the seaside village of Coronado, California, opens this week with Sam Mendes’ Empire of Light as the Opening Night selection, Elegance Bratton’s The Inspection is the Centerpiece selection, and Maria Schrader’s She Said taking the Closing Night spot, along with CIFF’s traditional screening of Billy Wilder’s classic Some Like it Hot.

The African Diaspora International Film Festival (ADIFF) celebrates its 30th anniversary from November 25 to December 11, 2022 with 89 narratives and documentaries from 44 countries to be presented in seven different venues in Manhattan.

Our Movie (Nuestra película), the powerful debut feature film by acclaimed producer Diana Bustamante (Memoria), will have its international premiere in the Kaleidoscope Competition at the 13th hybrid edition of DOC NYC, America’s largest documentary festival, taking place November 9–27.

AFI FEST 2022 announced the winners of the Jury awards with the Grand Jury Prize – Live Action Short going to Birds directed by Katherine Propper, Grand Jury Prize – Documentary Short went to Haulout directed by Evgenia Arbugaeva and Maxim Arbugaev, and Grand Jury Prize – Animated Short went to Sierra directed by Sander Joon. The Grand Jury Award winners for Live Action Short, Documentary Short and Animated Short will be eligible for the 2022 Best Live Action Short, Best Documentary Short and Best Animated Short Academy Awards®.

Walad Min Al Janna directed by Tarik Saleh took home the NDR narrative film prize as well as the Interfilm Church Prize trophy, at the 64th Nordic Film Days Lübeck (Nordische Filmtage Lübeck). The jury commented, “The jury of the NDR film prize awards a film with an impeccable script and breathtaking acting. This simple yet complex moral thriller is a tale of power and corruption that is highly relevant today, as no one has the choice to stay away from the political, religious and social issues of our time. The setting of the story is unique, the twists and turns are nothing but amazing. This is what a modern Nordic film looks like today: congratulations to Tarik Saleh and Boy from Heaven.”

Set to take place December 1 to 18, 2022, the 19th edition of San Francisco’s Another Hole in the Head Film Festival will showcase 30 features and 200+ short films in the realms of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, and assorted other genre fare.
