Vancouver International Film Festival 2020 (VIFF) announced the complete programming lineup for the Contemporary World Cinema and True North film series for its 39th edition taking place September 24–October 7, 2020. Contemporary World Cinema features narrative films from around the globe, showcasing works from both new and established filmmakers. True North celebrates the craft and creativity of Canadian storytellers and includes the opening film and world premiere of Monkey Beach by Loretta Sarah Todd.
Mill Valley Film Festival (MVFF43) Drive-In Cinema edition will launch Thursday, October 8 with the World Premiere of Edward Hall’s BLITHE SPIRIT, based on the 1941 play by Noël Coward, featuring Dame Judi Dench, Dan Stevens, Isla Fisher, and Leslie Mann.

YELLOW program
For the first time ever, this year’s 21st edition of the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival set to take place entirely online, from October 20 – 25, 2020, will open with a shorts film program. Throughout the Festival four short programs will be screened, each named after one of the four colors in the medicine wheel. For the Opening Gala on Tuesday, October 20, imagineNATIVE begins in the YELLOW quadrant and will feature a gathering of international short films, standing together. The short program YELLOW is composed of works created by artists from seven different nations: Êmîcêtôsêt: Many bloodlines by Theola Ross (Cree); Between Two Lines by Jack Steele (Wiradjuri); Te Wao Nui byNgariki Ngatae (Māori); Nuxalk Radio by Banchi Hanuse (Nuxalk); Audrey’s Story by Michelle Derosier (Anishinaabe); Kapaemahu by Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu (Kanaka Maoli); and The Fourfold by Alisi Telengut (Mongolian, Telengut). The fluidity of the works in YELLOW speaks to the artful nuance of Indigenous Cinema.
The 56th Chicago International Film Festival will open on Wednesday, October 14th, with the world premiere of the documentary film Belushi, directed by R.J. Cutler, chronicling the celebrated career and untimely death of native son and The Second City alumnus John Belushi.
Reeling, Chicago’s LGBTQ+ film festival will celebrate its 38th anniversary this fall with a new virtual edition, showcasing 30 features, 54 shorts across eight shorts programs from 21 countries. With over 175 films and 40+ countries represented, Calgary International Film Festival announced the 2020 lineup of much of the year’s most groundbreaking and must-see movies. The hybrid festival rolls out with 90+ in-cinema feature films and shorts package screenings and 160+ films that you can watch online. This will be first time the festival will be accessible by audiences outside Calgary – with streaming available across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba from September 24 to October 4, 2020.

The international premiere of the Colombian film Forgotten We’ll Be (El olvido que seremos), directed by Fernando Trueba and starring Javier Cámara, will close, out of competition, the Official Selection at the San Sebastian Festival’s 68th edition. The film, an adaptation of Héctor Abad Faciolince’s homonymous novel, is part of the Official Selection of Cannes 2020, cancelled due to the pandemic.
Ahead of its world premiere out of competition at Venice Film Festival on Saturday, September 5, the first trailer debuted for Quentin Dupieux’s (Deerskin) comedy Mandibles (Mandibules).
This year’s 15th edition of Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival will run September 8-13th, 2020. Due to COVID, the festival will be a hybrid affair, with socially distanced seating (of 25 or less) at the Film Center’s screenings, virtual interviews, and all festival films available online for viewing.
