Five finalists, selected from 52 entries from 32 countries, will advance in the Foreign Student Film category in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 38th Annual Student Academy Awards competition. Up to three winners, to be selected from this group, will be brought to Los Angeles to join U.S.-based Student Academy Award® winners for a week of industry-related activities and social events that will culminate in the awards ceremony on Saturday, June 11, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

52 entries from 32 countries, along with 523 entries from students representing 136 U.S. colleges and universities, are in competition for the 2011 Student Academy Awards. The competition – now in its 38th year – will culminate in the awards presentation, which will include screenings of the winning films, on Saturday, June 11, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

The 2011 Micromax IIFA Awards, officially the 12th International Indian Film Academy Awards aka the Bollywood Oscars announced the films nominations. Milan Luthria’s mafia gangster film, Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, leads the field with 12 nomination, followed by Dabangg, an action film starring Salman Khan, with 11 nominations.

The recipients of the prestigious 70th Annual Peabody Awards were announced by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication and two American Masters documentaries won Peabodys. LennoNYC, a poignant, revelatory documentary about John Lennon’s life and work in his adopted home city, and Elia Kazan: A Letter to Elia, an homage to the theatrical and film director by Martin Scorsese. Peabodys also went to William Kentridge: Anything Is Possible, an Art21 film that provided an intimate look at the creative process of a multifaceted artist whose work includes sculpture, animation, theater and tapestries, and Macbeth, a Great Performances production that sets Shakespeare’s bloody tragedy in a modern, militaristic society.

The awards this year was anything but boring. Stars from all over attended the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television 31st Annual Genie Awards that took place in Ottawa this year. Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies was the night’s biggest winner, taking home eight awards, including Best Motion Picture, Achievement in Direction (Denis Villeneuve), Adapted Screenplay (Denis Villeneuve), and Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Lubna Azabal). Barney’s Version followed closely behind, winning seven Genie Awards including Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Paul Giamatti), Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Dustin Hoffman) and Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (Minnie Driver). The Golden Reel Award went to Resident Evil: Afterlife as it collected $7,026,559 in Canadian box office receipts last year.

“The King’s Speech” was the ‘King’ at the 83rd annual Academy Awards on Sunday night, winning four Oscars: including Best Picture, Directing for director Tom Hooper, Writing – Original Screenplay for David Seidler and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Colin Firth.
Film Independent, the non-profit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, handed out top honors to Black Swan, Winter’s Bone, 127 Hours, and The Kids Are All Right at the 26th Film Independent Spirit Awards. The King’s Speech, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Get Low, Tiny Furniture, and Daddy Longlegs also received awards at the ceremony.

Xavier Beauvois’ “Des hommes et des dieux,” (Of Gods and Men) took the top prize for Best Film but Roman Polanski’s “The Ghost Writer,” lead the Cesar Awards aka the French Oscars with 4 wins including Best Director for Roman Polanski, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Score and Best Editing. “Of Gods and Men,” which was also France’s official entry to 2011 Oscar and “Gainsbourg” tied for 3 awards. “Of Gods and Men took the awards for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Cinematography; and “Gainsbourg” received the awards for Best Actor, Best Sound and Best First Film.

The Cinema Audio Society consisting of Sound Mixers and Associates from the Film and Television Industries announced the 47th Annual CAS Awards honorees and winners.

American Cinema Editors (ACE) announced the winners for the 61st Annual ACE Eddie Awards recognizing outstanding editing in nine categories of film, television and documentaries. Christopher Nolan received the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, while Career Achievement honors were bestowed on veteran film editors Michael Brown, A.C.E. and Michael Kahn, A.C.E. Director Joe Sargeant presented to Brown, with Steven Spielberg presenting to Kahn.
The winners of the 8th Annual Irish Film & Television Awards were honored at a gala ceremony held at Dublin’s Convention Centre Saturday 12th February 2011. Broadcasting live on Irish television, 37 IFTA Awards were announced in categories across feature film and television.
