The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present Honorary Awards to Samuel L. Jackson, Elaine May and Liv Ullmann, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Danny Glover. The four Oscar® statuettes will be presented at the Academy’s 12th Governors Awards on Saturday, January 15, 2022, in Los Angeles.

The American Film Institute (AFI) announced today that Julie Andrews will be presented with the 48th AFI Life Achievement Award, the highest honor for a career in film, at a Gala Tribute on Thursday, November 11, 2021, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. The event was originally scheduled for April 25, 2020 but postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Olympia Dukakis, winner of the Academy Award and Golden Globe for her performance in Moonstruck (1987) and the subject of the documentary about her life, titled Olympia, died today in New York City. She was 89.

Nomadland won best picture at the 93rd Academy Awards, along with best director for China-born Chloe Zhao – making her second woman and the first woman of color to win best director; and best actress went to Frances McDormand. This is the third win for McDormand, previously a winner for Fargo and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Indie films Nomadland, Sound of Metal, Promising Young Woman, Crip Camp, Minari, Palm Springs, Quo Vadis, Aida?, and Residue won awards at the 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards.

Nomadland won four BAFTAs including Best Film, Director for Chloé Zhao, Leading Actress for Frances McDormand, and Cinematography for Joshua James Richards at the 2021 EE British Academy Film Awards, presented over two ceremonies this weekend.
