Three Emerson College students had an idea to start a film festival as a way to showcase student filmmakers around the Boston area. When coronavirus forced everyone into quarantine, they had a choice to either let their months of prepping go in vain or to find a way to make it happen; they chose the latter. Boston Shorts Fest is a fully student-owned virtual film festival that premiered July 10th and will available to screen until July 17th, with all funds going to support racial justice.

July is off to a good start with the release of some highly anticipated official trailers. Due to the global pandemic, distribution companies who would’ve normally released their movies in theaters have turned to streaming giants like Netflix and HBO Max to premiere their films to audiences around the world. The UK arts sector will receive $2 billion in government relief after being hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. The UK announced over the weekend that emergency grants and loans would protect the country’s museums, galleries, theaters, independent cinemas, heritage sites, and music venues. Amid mounting pressure, art industry leaders are looking forward to the financial support.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 819 artists and executives including Awkwafina – “The Farewell,” Natasha Lyonne – “Honey Boy,” and Lakeith Stanfield – “Sorry to Bother You” to join the organization. The 2020 class is 45% women, 36% underrepresented ethnic/racial communities, and 49% international from 68 countries. There are 75 Oscar® nominees, including 15 winners, and five recipients of Scientific and Technical Awards. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2020.
In response to the COVID-19 global pandemic, which resulted in UK cinemas closing on March 20, British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced temporary changes to its film eligibility rules for the EE British Academy Film Awards for 2021.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the ABC Television Network today announced the 93rd Oscars® ceremony will move to Sunday, April 25, 2021, as a result of the global pandemic caused by COVID-19. The show, which will air live on ABC, was originally scheduled for February 28, 2021.
The Peabody Awards recognized 30 programs including documentary films Apollo 11, For Sama, Hale County, This Morning This Evening and The Edge of Democracy as the most compelling and empowering stories released in broadcasting and digital media during 2019. Actress Cicely Tyson was named winner of the Peabody Career Achievement Award.
Sundance Institute selected 22 independent nonfiction filmmakers and their projects for the latest Grantees of the Institute’s Documentary Fund. Grant support, unrestricted and totaling $520,000, will be extended to projects in all stages of development, production, post-production and audience engagement.
