The imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival announced the appointment of Jason Ryle as Executive Director. In this role he will be responsible for leading the operations and strategic efforts of the organization and the vision of the festival.

Sydney filmmakers take the top awards in the 2010 SCINEMA Festival of Science Film Competition
Sydney filmmakers took the top awards in the 2010 SCINEMA Festival of Science Film Competition. Sydney filmmaker, Ian Walker, won Best Director for his documentary I, Psychopath, and Sydney production company Essential Media won Best Film for How Kevin Bacon Cured Cancer and Best Television Series for Whatever! The Science of Teens, shown on the local Australian ABC.
Kayna Fichadia, a year two student at Epping North Primary School, was awarded best Primary Student film for her five minute film, Animal Diversity in Bondi.

Oklahoma native Lance McDaniel chosen to lead state’s largest film festival, deadCENTER Film Festival
deadCENTER Film Festival officials announced the hiring of Lance McDaniel as Executive Director. McDaniel replaces longtime director Cacky Poarch, who resigned earlier this year following the most successful festival to date. McDaniel’s background in marketing and international brand consultation, combined with his filmmaking and passion for education, make him the ideal person to take the helm at this time.
“Cacky Poarch, Melissa Scaramucci and Kim Haywood have transformed deadCenter into a nationally-renowned platform for independent film and an outstanding showcase for Oklahoma creativity,” said McDaniel. “We hope to build on their success by partnering with local universities and corporate sponsors to educate students all over Oklahoma about independent film, and to help groom the next generation of Oklahoma filmmakers.”

2010 BLUE Ocean Film Festival Finalists
BLUE Ocean Film Festival announced the finalists of the 2010 film competition. All Finalist films will be screened during the Festival (August 24 – 29) in one of the 6 Monterey Peninsula theater venues in Monterey, California.

Snow Film Fest NYC Announces 2010 Screening Panel
Snow Film Fest NYC earlier this Summer announced the official 2010 Screening Panel. Packed with both snow and art industry names, these fine folks have pledged to dedicate their expertise and knowledge in their fields to help award the talented pool of snow filmmakers showcasing their work from November 19 – 21, 2010 at the landmark Tribeca Cinemas in lower Manhattan. The panel will judge the 2010 Official Selections across many categories including but not limited to: Best Feature, Best Short, Best Maneuver, Best Cinematography, Best Musical Score, and Best Animation.

From Sweden – THE GIRL – film opens in NYC Sept 17; in LA Oct. 1
THE GIRL, a film by Fredrik Edfeldt that premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, and was selected as one of ten films in the Variety Critic’s Choice program at the 2009 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, will will open in New York at Cinema Village on September 17 and in Los Angeles at Laemmle Sunset 5 on October 1. Other cities will follow.
In a lonely house on the countryside a ten year old girl takes her first steps from childhood into the world of grown-ups. The girl has to spend her summer with her bohemian aunt when her parents go to Africa to work with an aid project. But the aunt isn’t reliable and when she goes off sailing with a man she has met, the girl decides to take care of herself.

From Estonia – THE TEMPTATION OF ST. TONY – film opens in NYC Sept. 17; in LA Oct. 1
‘The Temptation Of St. Tony’, a film by Velko Õunpuu. Award-Winners At The 31st Durban International Film Festival
The Durban International Film Festival announced that the winner of the Best Feature Film of its 31st edition is The White Meadows (Iran). Directed by Mohammad Rasoulof, the film was lauded by the International Jury as a “timeless and poetic narrative.” “The film conjures up a landscape that is visually stunning and intriguing because it is both harsh and beautiful. It is an enigmatic and poignant political allegory and takes the viewers through a journey on life’s fundamental questions and beliefs,” the jury said.

Since the premiere of the first official ABP film festival on September 9th 2004, the NYC based Animation Block Party is dedicated to exhibiting the world’s best independent, professional and student animation. The seventh annual Animation Block Party was July 30-August 1, 2010 in Brooklyn, NY at Rooftop Films and Bam Cinematek.
