In light of the global surge in Covid-19 cases, the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan (MMJCCM) will move to a Virtual festival for its 3rd annual Cinematters: NY Social Justice Film Festival, with dates remaining the same – January 13–17, 2022. Screenings will be shown via Eventive and exclusive Q+A’s will be hosted via Zoom. All Q+As will now take place at the times that in-person screenings would have been scheduled.
The Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan (MMJCCM) announced the lineup for its 3rd annual Cinematters: NY Social Justice Film Festival, which will screen in person and virtually January 13–17, 2022. Building on the festival’s success over the past two years and the ongoing global conversations around racial and social justice, the festival will present impactful films and conversations exploring inequality, injustice, advocacy, and social responsibility through the lens of issues such as racial and economic discrimination, environmental justice, immigrants’ rights, and religious intolerance.
The Harder They Fall directed by Jeymes Samuel and starring Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, Regina King, Zazie Beetz along with LaKeith Stanfield lead the African American Film Critics Association’s annual list of the top 10 films of the year. Other films on the list include King Richard, Respect, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Passing and Belfast.

Kenneth Branagh’s critically acclaimed drama Belfast took home the Best Feature Film prize at the 2021 Twin Cities Film Fest. A semi-autobiographical portrait of childhood and working class family life in Northern Ireland during the tumultuous period of the late 1960s, the film stars Jamie Dornan and Caitriona Balfe.

Pollard and Rex Miller’s Citizen Ashe, followed by the Centerpiece Selections of E. Sony Pictures Classics will release the documentary film WHO WE ARE — A Chronicle of Racism in America, ACLU Deputy Legal Director Jeffery Robinson’s powerful and groundbreaking talk on the history of U.S. anti-Black racism. The documentary had its world premiere at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival where it won the Documentary Spotlight Audience Award.
Sheffield DocFest announced their 2021 full program including the World Premiere of Uprising, by Steve McQueen and James Rogan. Uprising is a vivid and visceral three-part series which examines three events from 1981: in January, the New Cross Fire which killed 13 black teenagers; in March, Black People’s Action Day, which saw more than 20,000 people join the first organized mass protest by black British people; and then the Brixton riots in April.
