• World Premiere of DRIVEN by Nick Hamm to Close 75th Venice International Film Festival

    Nick Hamm is a BAFTA award-winning director and producer whose career extends across feature films, television, and theatre. Hamm began his career as resident director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, focusing on both Shakespeare and contemporary plays before moving into film. After winning a BAFTA for the Chekhov adaptation THE HARMFULNESS OF TOBACCO, starring Edward Fox, Hamm went on to direct the BBC hit series PLAY ON ONE, starring Catherine Zeta- Jones and Colin Firth; and ITV’s highly acclaimed RIK MAYALL PRESENTS, starring Helena Bonham Carter.   • Argentinian Crime Thriller EL ANGEL Steals November Release Date

    The Argentinian film El Angel directed by Luis Ortega that screened earlier this year at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, and next at the upcoming 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, will open in theaters in November. The film, starring Lorenzo Ferro, Chino Darin, Mercedes Morán, Daniel Fanego, Luis Gnecco, Peter Lanzani, and Cecilia Roth, is inspired by the true story of Carlos Robledo Puch, known as “the black angel”, a thief who killed eleven people in the early 1970s in Argentina. The Orchard will release El Angel in Los Angeles at the NuArt on November 9th, as well as in New York in early November and rolling out to other US cities in November and December 2018. Buenos Aires, 1971. Carlitos (Lorenzo Ferro) is a seventeen-year-old youth with movie star swagger, blond curls and a baby face. As a young boy, he coveted other people’s things, but it wasn’t until his early adolescence that his true calling—to be a thief—manifested itself. When he meets Ramon (Chino Darin) at his new school, Carlitos is immediately drawn to him and starts showing off to get his attention. Together they will embark on a journey of discoveries, love and crime. Killing is just a random offshoot of the violence, which continues to escalate until Carlitos is finally apprehended. Because of his angelic appearance, the press dubs Carlitos “The Angel of Death.” Showered with attention because of his beauty, he becomes an overnight celebrity. Altogether, he is believed to have committed over forty thefts and eleven homicides. Today, after more than forty-five years in jail, Carlos Robledo Puch is the longest-serving prisoner in the history of Argentina.

  • Music Video ‘Mountains’ by Laurie Berenhaus to Screen at HollyShorts Film Festival

    Music Video Mountains by Laurie Berenhaus The award-winning animation music video “Mountains” by filmmaker Laurie Berenhaus for the titular song by Mac/Glidden, will screen this Summer in LA, as part of the HollyShorts Film Festival on Monday, August 13th, 2018. Illustrating the titular song by Mac/Glidden, “Mountains” is an animated short in which a sylphlike woman, uneasy in her own skin, uses dance as a way to find a sense of personal freedom. As the dancer, played by Anne Marsen, removes various clothing items – her hat, her sunglasses, her cape – she looks more relaxed, more carefree. Similarly, as she discards these trappings of the material world, her movements become freer, more joyous, and celebratory. Music Video Mountains by Laurie Berenhaus Filmmaker Laurie Berenhaus, who directed and animated the music video, was inspired to create the short when Mac/Glidden told her that they wrote the song because of their frustration with city life. Indeed, the song’s opening lyrics are, “Where I’m from, the stars are on the street. We build mountains in our minds and in concrete.” “Mountains,” then, is a song about confinement; feeling confined within one’s own body. Feeling confined within one’s environment. Berenhaus took this theme and ran with it. As the dancer in the video strips away her clothing, she’s also shedding layers, opening herself up, and becoming more vulnerable. Berenhaus’s animation style is deliberately loose and gestural, maintaining a “ripped from the sketchbook” quality that recalls the work of legendary illustrators such as Jules Feiffer and Bill Plympton. The film uses this style to explore the main character’s personal journey. As she becomes more relaxed, so do the animation drawings. They become more improvisational, more spontaneous. Facial features are suggested rather than fully rendered. Figures become ethereal, ghostlike. Untethered to anything solid, like a mountain. The screening at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese 6 Theatres is part of the 14th annual HollyShorts Film Festival, running from August 9th to August 18th, 2018. In April of 2017, “Mountains” was shown at the Brooklyn Music Video Festival. This kicked off a worldwide series of screenings for the unique and charming music video, which was subsequently shown at the International River Film Festival in Italy, the KLIK Amsterdam Animation Festival in the Netherlands, and the Academy Award qualifying- Leeds International Film Festival, among other prominent venues. Music Video Mountains by Laurie Berenhaus Along the way, “Mountains” has earned much critical praise. In November 2017, the Leeds International Film Festival in England raved, “‘Mountains’ is a glorious and giddy music video which creates a world of awe and wonder through a deceptively simple animation.” And the LA Femme Film Festival offered similar praise in October of last year, saying of Berenhaus, “Her talent is magical.” Now the film is making it’s Hollywood debut, in the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres.     Laurie Berenhaus is a visual artist, director, and educator. Berenhaus’ work has exhibited and screened at prominent venues, including The Museum of the Moving Image, MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) Education & Research Department, and Leeds International Film Festival. Berenhaus’ professional career has spanned across the entertainment, fashion and tech startup industry exploring technology’s impact on design and production. Her work has been covered by the Creators Project, Adafruit, and 3D World Magazine. A graduate of the University of the Arts (BFA, Sculpture 2010) and The Digital Animation and Visual Effects School, (2013) Berenhaus is passionate about projects that allow her to be pushed on an emotional and technical level. She lives in Astoria, NY with her husband, cat, and many puppets.

    Eldorado The refugee crisis documentary Eldorado by Oscar nominee Markus Imhoof has been selected to represent Switzerland in the category of Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards. Eldorado had its world premiere earlier this year at the 2018 Berlin Film Festival. Drawing inspiration from his personal encounter with Giovanna, the refugee child who was taken in by his family during World War II, Markus Imhoof tracks today’s refugees on their dangerous journey to Europe. The 91st Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on February 24, 2019.

  • 7th Dominican Film Festival NY Awards: FLOR DEL SOL by Dilia Pacheco Wins Best Film

    Flor del Sol Flor del Sol by first time director Dilia Pacheco took the top prize at the 7th Dominican Film Festival NY, winner of the Official Feature Film competition.  Todas las Mujeres son Iguales was chosen by the audience to receive DFFNY’s Audience Award. Best Director went to Archie Lopez for Luis, Best Actor to Dominican marvel Alfonso Rodriguez for Luis and Best Actress to Cheddy Garcia for Todas las Mujeres son Iguales. “Dilia Pacheco’s portrait of Victor Mendez Capellán, a working-class orphan who armed only with his wits became one the most successful businessman in Dominican Republic, is a powerful, heartfelt and cinematic delight,” stated the jury when awarding the prize. Four separate categories were considered on the short films competition: the “Dominicans in the Diaspora Short Film Showcase,” in which 16 shorts competed, “Short Films – Big Stories,” which included 13 short films; “Women in film” with 7 films participating and The Latino U.S Experience which included 10 stories. In the Diaspora Showcase, the jury award first place to Someday by director J.S Mayank. Mamba (Sam Puefua) and La Entreviu (Maite Bonilla) took home second and third place, respectively, and The devil’s Courier (Jason Marrero) received a Special Jury Mention. In “Short Films – Big Stories,” the jury awarded first place to Chanel by director Humberto Vallejo and Special Jury Mention to Zozobra by Jose Luis Jimenez. In Women in Film the award went to Elena directed by Ayerim Villanueva and in the Latino Experience in U.S the award went to Para mi Madre by Sam Hayden. The jury in the Short Film Categories included actor Kevin Martinez, director Christopher James Lopez and film critic Duarte Geraldino. The 7th Dominican Film Festival NY ran July 24 to 29, 2018, under the slogan “Cinema Unites Us!”, and screened over 80 films, 18 of which were on the ballot for audience consideration.

An Unexpected Love represents the moviemaking debut of the screenwriter and producer Juan Vera. Co-producer of Zama, helmed by Lucrecia Martel, Elefante blanco and Carancho, directed by Pablo Trapero, Vera has as the stars of his first work Mercedes Morán and Donostia Award-winner Ricardo Darín, who was also involved as a producer together with his son, Chino Darín. Mercedes Morán (Villa Dolores, Argentina, 1955) has worked with some of the big-name Latin American filmmakers: Lucrecia Martel, Juan José Campanella, Walter Salles, Ana Katz (Los Marziano, Official Selection 2011) and Pablo Larraín. Her work in Sueño Florianópolis landed her this year’s Best Actress Award at the Karlovy Vary Festival. At this year’s Un Certain Regard, she also premiered El ángel, to be screened in Perlak. Ricardo Darín (Buenos Aires, 1957), one of the most prestigious Latin American actors, received last year’s Donostia Award in recognition of a career which has seen him work with moviemakers including Adolfo Aristarain, Campanella, Fabián Bielinsky, Fernando Trueba, Trapero, Cesc Gay and Santiago Mitre. Fantastic Fest alumni return to the festival in a dual threat that promises to shock, awe and conquer audiences. First up APOSTLE sees Gareth Evans’ (THE RAID) take on the folk horror genre with Dan Stevens as a mysterious man infiltrating a sinister cult headed by Michael Sheen to rescue his sister with eye-gouging results. Then, Timo Tjahjanto pits Joe Taslim against Iko Uwais (THE RAID) in THE NIGHT COMES FOR US, an action thriller where the body count breaks new records in bone-crunching fights, venomous violence and dynamic destruction! Fantastic Fest’s mission to bring the best of genre continues to flourish with a worldwide group of films headed to Austin for a celebration unlike any other. Leading the pack is returning comedic genius Quentin Dupieux (RUBBER) with his unexpected tale of a police interrogation during a murder investigation over the course of one night in the North American Premiere of KEEP AN EYE OUT. Director Alejandro Fadel’s cerebral Cannes shocker MURDER ME, MONSTER will also have its North American Premiere at the festival. Sensational shot-on-16mm psychotropic horror LUZ will be in Austin for its U.S. Premiere, and the thrilling Swedish independent blockbuster THE UNTHINKABLE will blast the audience with its European take on a nation-under-siege big-budget spectacle at its World Premiere. Other Fantastic Fest highlights include a focus on global female genre filmmakers who are blasting through the silver screen with distinctive and brilliant features. From Ukraine, Marysia Nikitiuk explores the clash between old world values and young love in a visually charged fusion of genres in WHEN THE TREES FALL. Spain’s Sonia Escolano turns up the tension in her mesmerising treatise on religion, faith and belief in HOUSE OF SWEAT AND TEARS. Isabella Eklof brings her Sundance critical hit HOLIDAY to the fest all the way from Denmark. And finally, alumna Amanda Kramer makes an unforgettable mark with her distinctive debut LADYWORLD, a post-apocalyptic, daring probe into the darkest reaches of the teenage female mind. Fantastic Fest turns its eye to South Korea and explores the Korean Quota Quickies, a period in the 1970s which saw filmmaking flourish despite stifling ideological censorship thanks to a quota system which required a strict number of local productions be made for each of the foreign films imported.  Although most of these were rushed productions, clever directors used the system to their advantage to sneak strange and daring content past producers, directors and censors. Fantastic Fest is going to present two very rarely seen films from the period: BANGREUMYEON from director Kim Ki-Young, one of Park Chan-Wook’s directing idols, and QUIT YOUR LIFE from director Park Nou-Sik, who provided the literal roadmap for all Korean revenge movies to come.“To be able to highlight a period of Korean cinema that is largely unknown in North America is a brilliant opportunity to not only re-discover what shaped the modern Korean cinema we all know and love, but also a great way to tap into the sheer electric creative force running through the films as shaped by the strict authoritarian environment they were created in,” says FF Creative Director Evrim Ersoy. The festival will also bring the best of modern Korean cinema to the festival including Lee Chang-dong’s critical Cannes hit BURNING. AGFA (the American Genre Film Archive) triumphantly returns to the festival with a trio of restorations all receiving the World Premiere treatment. ‘80s shot-on-video epic BLOOD LAKE is restored from the 1” master tapes and arrives alongside a double bill of I WAS A TEENAGE SERIAL KILLER and MARY JANE’S NOT A VIRGIN ANYMORE, celebrating the punk riot grrrl feminist cinema of Sarah Jacobson, both in brand new 2K preservations. Plus the highly-anticipated World Premiere of MANIAC, restored lovingly from the once-thought-lost 16mm negatives into 4K; with director William Lusting in attendance! A bizarre trio of animation from across the world arrives at the festival to showcase the most daring, dangerous and unique styles. From Japan and the demented mind of Ujicha comes VIOLENCE VOYAGER, a stop-motion cornucopia of mesmerising madness. From Chile, directing duo Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña’s breathtaking WOLF HOUSE, featuring perhaps the most inherently sinister and chilling story in any film this year. And finally, from Czech Republic and building on the great Czech puppet animation tradition arrives Aurel Klimt’s delightfully untrue but entertaining story of the first dog in space, LAIKA.

A rainy night. A dazed and numb young cabdriver, Luz, drags herself into the brightly lit entrance of a rundown police station. Across town in a nightspot, Nora seductively engages police psychiatrist Dr. Rossini in a conversation. Nora is possessed by a demonic entity, longing for the woman it loves – Luz. She tells the Doctor about her old schoolmate Luz’s rebellious past at a Chilean school for girls. Increasingly drunk on her story, Rossini turns into an easy prey in Nora’s hands, but he’s soon called away to the police station to examine Luz. Supervised by his colleagues, the doctor puts Luz in a state of hypnosis that initiates a series of flashbacks, unfolding the events leading to her arrival. But the entity that has taken control of the doctor wants something more. Bit by bit it slips into Luz’ reenactment and makes old memories come to light.   • Calgary International Film Festival Announces 2018 Music On Screen Lineup Featuring Joan Jett, Randy Bachman and More

And with Calgary’s growing brand as a music city, we are excited to partner with the National Music Centre once again, both for screenings and live music.” Here are the films in Music On Screen: BACHMAN, directed by John Barnard The story of Bachman Turner Overdrive founder Randy Bachman, from his early days of The Guess Who and hits like American Woman to today. Bachman’s singularly focused goal of music has taken him from spectacular highs to crushing lows. BAD REPUTATION, directed by Kevin Kerslake A raucous journey through Joan Jett’s life and career, from her early years as founder of “The Runaways,” her first collaborations with Kenny Laguna, and ultimately, to her status as rock and roll icon. HEAVY TRIP, directed by Jukka Vidgreen and Juuso Laatio In this offbeat comedy from Finland, Turo is stuck in a small village where the best thing in his life is being the lead vocalist for the amateur metal band Impaled Rektum. INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENT -THE STORY OF WAX TRAX! RECORDS, directed by Julia Nash The two music fanatics who started Wax Trax! moved their store to Chicago, then created their own label, with bands like Bauhaus, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Revolting Cocks, and Front 242. SATAN AND ADAM, directed by V. Scott Balcerek. Against the backdrop of racial violence in 1968 Harlem, Adam Gussow, a young white Jewish harmonica player, and Sterling “Mr. Satan” Magee, an older black Mississippi bluesman, joined forces to blaze a new musical trail. Shot over 30 years, the film also features U2’s THE EDGE. UP TO SNUFF, directed by Mark Maxey American musician and composer W.G. Snuffy Walden overcame the excesses of rock and roll to find success as one of the most beloved composers in television history. The film features luminaries including Aaron Sorkin, Martin Sheen, Tom Arnold, Timothy Busfield, Fred Savage, Marshall Herskovitz, Steve Lukather, Chaka Khan and Eric Burdon, and scenes from The West Wing, Wonder Years, and thirtysomething. LOVE, SCOTT, directed by Laura Marie Wayne The raw tale of a gay musician who is attacked and paralyzed, set against a stunning score by Sigur Rós. Documentary director Laura Marie Wayne originally hails from Calgary. MAGIC PIANO & THE CHOPIN SHORTS This collaboration with Calgary Opera and Honens features several short films accompanied by live piano. Audience members are invited to “Opera at the Eddy” afterward. THREE PAGES, directed by Roger Gariepy In this Canadian short film, Matin, an unassuming middle-aged accountant, learns he has only weeks to live. He is determined to learn the three pages of a Bach adagio for piano he’d abandoned as a child. UNLOVABLE, directed by Suzi Yoonessi, A musical comedy that could be considered anti-score. Actor John Hawkes (seen in in SMALL TOWN CRIME in last year’s festival) composed the music, an essential part of the plot.
