The Athena Film Festival (AFF) at Barnard College will open its 2019 edition on Thursday, February 28, with the New York premiere of “Fast Color.” The film, directed by Julia Hart and written by Hart and Jordan Horowitz, stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a hero forced to run when her superhuman abilities are discovered. Years after abandoning her family, the only place she has left to hide is home. Lorraine Toussaint and David Strathairn co-star.
Sundance Film Festival rounds out this year’s 2019 program with additions to the Documentary Premieres and Special Events sections spotlighting two controversial personalities – Steve Bannon and Michael Jackson. The Festival will take place in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort January 24 to February 4, 2019.

A total of six Berlinale Classics will be screening as part of the Retrospective at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival. The Berlinale will mark a world premiere of the restored versions of five of the films, and the international premiere of one. In addition to classics from Germany, Denmark, and Hungary, the series will include film classics from the USA, Norway, and South Korea.
The Favourite leads the nominations for the EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) in 2019 with nominations in 12 categories, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Make Up & Hair, Editing and Yorgos Lanthimos for Director. The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) celebrates its 100th anniversary today, and to mark the occasion, the society released their members’ list of 100 Milestone Films in the art and craft of cinematography of the 20th century. The list is the first of its kind to showcase the best of cinematography as selected by professional cinematographers.
Gwaai Edenshaw and Helen Haig-Brown’s 19th century Haida epic Edge of the Knife led the 2018 Vancouver Film Critics Circle awards, taking home four prizes, including Best Actor, Male in a Canadian Film (Tyler York), Best Director of a Canadian Film, and Best Canadian Film.
Directors Guild of America President Thomas Schlamme today announced the five nominees for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2018, and the five nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director for 2018.
