The renowned New German Cinema New Talent Award goes to eligible up-and-comers in the New German Cinema section at Munich International Film festival (Filmfest München) and carries a purse of €70,000, making it one of the most lucrative newcomer awards in the German film industry. Writers, directors, and actors in the sidebar who have not made more than three feature films have a shot at the prize, as well as producers who have not made more than six feature films. Candidates from fourteen films qualify this year. All are world premieres at the festival.
The €70,000 Euro purse goes to Best Director (€30,000), Best Production (€20,000), Best Screenplay (€10,000) and Best Actor/Actress (€10,000). In 2019, the recipients will be chosen by actress Melika Foroutan, producer Claudia Steffen, and author Alfred Holighaus.
Ever since it began as a directing prize in 1989, the New German Cinema New Talent Award has been among the most coveted prizes in Germany, and has proven remarkably accurate at picking future stars, including such luminaries as Jan-Ole Gerster (“Oh Boy”), Jakob Lass (“Love Steaks”) or actress Vicky Krieps (“The Chambermaid“).
