Lionsgate debuted the official trailer for Americana, the neo-western crime thriller film starring Sydney Sweeney, Paul Walter Hauser, and Halsey.

Set in a small South Dakota town, Sydney Sweeney stars as Penny Jo Poplin, a diner waitress and aspiring singer-songwriter inspired by Dolly Parton. Paul Walter Hauser plays Lefty Ledbetter, a reclusive war veteran with a big heart, while Halsey portrays Mandy Starr, a rebellious character battling personal demons. The ensemble cast also includes Eric Dane, Simon Rex, and Zahn McClarnon, each bringing depth to this tale of outsiders entangled in a high-stakes pursuit of a stolen Native American artifact—a Lakota Ghost Shirt.

Directed by Tony Tost, Americana world premiered at South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival, and opens in theaters on August 22, 2025.

Here is the synopsis:

A gallery of dynamic characters clash over the possession of a rare Native American artifact in this wildly entertaining modern-day western.

After the artifact falls onto the black market, a shy waitress with big dreams (Sydney Sweeney) teams up with a lovelorn military veteran (Paul Walter Hauser) to gain possession of it, putting them in the crosshairs of a ruthless criminal (Eric Dane) working on behalf of a Western antiquities dealer (Simon Rex). Bloodshed ensues when others join the battle, including the leader of an indigenous group (Zahn McClarnon) and a desperate woman fleeing her mysterious past (Halsey).

Critics have praised Americana for its storytelling and ensemble performances. Simon Thompson of The Playlist lauded it as “a first-rate crime thriller infused with Altman, Tarantino, & Coen Brothers,” writing, “Tost’s level of skill when it comes to storytelling and characterization here rivals the likes of Tracy Letts, Martin McDonagh, and David Sedaris. Taking tropes and toying with them, carefully and creatively hitting social and cultural beats and concepts, there is a refinement at play that contemporizes and enriches the classic presentation of middle America and those who live there.”
