Our War, Bernard-Henri Lévy’s fourth documentary from the frontlines of the war against Ukraine, co-directed with Marc Roussel, offers an immersive portrayal of the ongoing conflict.

Filmed between February and May 2025, the film captures the harrowing realities faced by Ukrainian soldiers and civilians alike. From the trenches of Pokrovsk to the besieged city of Sumy, Lévy and Roussel document the resilience and courage of those on the frontlines, interweaving their experiences with high-level political engagements, including meetings with Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Emmanuel Macron, and a tense visit to Washington, D.C., involving former President Donald Trump.

Our War premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival during the special “Ukraine Day” event, alongside two other documentaries focusing on Ukraine’s struggle. The film will open on June 11 at the Quad Cinema in New York followed by Los Angeles (June 18), Chicago (June 16) and Atlanta (August 22).

According to the official synopsis:

Over three years into Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Our War shows Lévy on the hottest locations of the Ukrainian frontline, from Pokrovsk to Sumy, at the exact moment when the future of Ukraine and Europe is playing out – at the White House, in European capitals, and on the battlefield. As with his previous documentaries, Glory to the Heroes and Slava Ukraini, the film chronicles the immense sacrifice and courage of the Ukrainian soldiers and civil society in this existential war – existential for Ukraine, and for the West.

In Our War, Lévy, with co-director Marc Roussel, is back on the frontline in Ukraine in the days leading up to and during the Oval Office debacle of February 2025. He captures the incredulity and shock of the soldiers in Pokrovsk, the most ravaged part of the war zone, as the military watches this pivotal and painful moment in which the tectonic plates of the international world order shift before the eyes of the world. From there, Lévy embeds with elite drone units who are implementing the most advanced war technologies to date and follows the frontline to Sumy, just days before the horrific Palm Sunday massacre. With unprecedented access, Lévy’s exclusive and rare footage demonstrates why this barbaric war waged by Russia is existential; why Ukraine must win and why victory for Ukraine is possible, despite the pessimism of global arm-chair experts.

Bernard-Henri Lévy is an iconic French intellectual, filmmaker and author of dozens of books who has been described by The New York Times as ‘an intellectual adventurer who brings publicity to unfashionable political causes.’ His documentaries, Glory to the Heroes and Slava Ukraini, released in 2023 across the United States and in Europe, took viewers to the heart of the war against Ukraine through frontline war diaries and premiered at the US Congress and the United Nations.

In an interview with Forbes, Lévy emphasized the broader implications of the conflict, stating, “The war in Ukraine isn’t under-reported. It was underestimated… It’s the very security of Europe, and peace in the world. That’s the challenge – to show what’s at stake.” He further articulated the necessity of confronting the realities of war to galvanize international support and prevent complacency in the face of tyranny.”
