Architecton, the latest documentary from Russian filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky is a visually arresting exploration of humanity’s relationship with stone and concrete. Starring architect and designer Michele De Lucchi, and using sweeping drone shots along with intimate portrayals, the film looks at how our architectural choices reflect societal values and the impermanence of modern constructions.
The documentary made its world premiere at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, where it was nominated for both the Golden Bear for Best Film and the Documentary Award, followed by screenings at CPH:DOX, the Hong Kong International Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival, and BFI London Film Festival. A24 will distribute the film in the United States, with a release date set for August 1, 2025.
According to the official synopsis, Architecton is “An extraordinary journey through the material that makes up our habitat: concrete, and its ancestor, stone. Victor Kossakovsky raises a fundamental question: how do we inhabit the world of tomorrow?” The film centers on a landscape project by Italian architect Michele De Lucchi, using the circle as a motif to reflect on the rise and fall of civilizations. It captures breathtaking imagery from the temple ruins of Baalbek in Lebanon to the recent destruction of cities in Turkey following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in early 2023 .
Critics have praised Architecton for its immersive visuals and contemplative narrative. Euronews in its review, noted, “Architecton isn’t a film you watch – it’s a meditative poem that keeps your eyes glued to the screen, which needs to be the biggest you can find for the full and immersive impact of Kossakovsky’s film to truly resonate.” It continued, “Shot in ultra-high frame rate, Achitecton is a monumental sight to behold, with every sharp detail mesmerising the viewer.”
