Forastera follows sixteen-year-old Catalina on a vacation in Mallorca, Spain, when her grandmother suddenly passes away. As her life gets whipped into a whirlwind over how to deal with this loss while enjoying her vacation, she begins to change—suddenly, she starts wearing her grandmother’s clothes and adopting her mannerisms. As the line between Cata and her grandmother’s personalities begin to blur, she also begins to blur family roles as she begins to develop an influence over her grandfather mourning his wife. A touching film about the adolescent reckoning with loss, as well as how we remember those we lose.

“We’re thrilled to bring Forasteria to U.S. audiences,” says Ryan Krivoshey from Grasshopper Film. “Lucía Aleñar Iglesias has crafted a luminous, deeply felt debut — a film that explores adolescence, loss, and the mysterious ways we remain connected (across time, continents, and worlds). Told with striking visual precision and emotional grace, it heralds the arrival of an extraordinary new voice in contemporary cinema, and it’s exactly the kind of bold and visionary work we’re proud to champion.”

“Forastera is not just another sun-drenched summer holiday coming-of-age tale – its web of mysteries is so intricate that even when the plot uses incertitude to suggest a slightly disturbing shift, the emotional complexity is convincing,” says Sevina Petkova of Cineuropa in a review.
