
Actress Sally Kirkland, whose career spanned more than six decades, died on November 11, 2025 at the age of 84 in Palm Springs, California.
Her representative, Michael Greene, confirmed she passed away at 1:50 AM PST while in hospice care.
Born on October 31, 1941 in New York City, Kirkland emerged from the avant-garde theatre scene of the 1960s and later built a formidable film and television résumé. She gained wide acclaim for her portrayal of the title role in the 1987 independent comedy-drama Anna, for which she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama and earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Kirkland appeared in more than 250 film and television productions over her career. Among her notable film credits are The Sting (1973), Private Benjamin (1980), JFK (1991), and Bruce Almighty (2003). Her performance in Anna remains a signature role for delivering humor and a fearless depth of character.
In recent years Kirkland remained active in independent film. Her last released film role was as a version of herself in Xaque Gruber’s Sallywood (2024), a comedy-drama inspired by a young writer’s obsession with her career and his journey to Hollywood.
