Olmo, the coming-of-age comedy written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Fernando Eimbcke, has been acquired by Greenwich Entertainment.

Greenwich plans to release the film in theaters nationwide on August 7.

Olmo premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival before making its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film went on to receive the Jury Prize at the Deauville American Film Festival and the Church of Sweden Youth Film Award at the BUFF Mal Film Festival. It has also screened at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, Morelia International Film Festival, AFI Fest, BFI London Film Festival, and Torino Film Festival.

The film follows Olmo, who just wants to be a normal teenager and hang out with his best friend, but he must help care for his sick father. When Olmo gets invited to a party by his beautiful neighbor, he will do whatever he can to meet up with her while embarking on an adventure of mischief, laughs, and chaos. As the night unfolds, he may come to love the very place he’s spent so long trying to escape: his home.

“I’ve always been drawn to stories about growing up – the joy, the playfulness, the pain, the confusion – it is not a coincidence that almost all my movies involve characters who are kids,” said director Fernando Eimbcke. “On ‘Olmo’, I was lucky enough to write the script with Vanesa Garnica, one of my best friends since we were 14 years old growing up in Mexico. We shared a love of music and John Hughes movies and because of this, we had such a lovely shorthand. Our criteria to decide if something worked was simple: if it made us laugh, it stayed. Even more so if it made us cry. With Olmo, we wanted to portray the full spectrum of adolescence including all the beauty and heartbreak that can come with it, as well as highlight the extraordinary circumstances that ordinary families face every day. We’re excited to be working with Greenwich to share the film with U.S. audiences this summer.”

The film is also scheduled for release later in the year in Japan through Starcat Entertainment, on international airlines through Encore, in Eastern Europe through HBO, in Latin America through Amazon Prime, and in Indonesia through Falcon PT.
