Here is the first-look teaser trailer for Crooks, the crime-thriller written and directed by Mickey Keating, premiering at Tribeca Film Festival.

His eighth feature film is set in the streets of Chicago and marks an impressive turn in Keating’s filmography. Starring Angela Trimbur as Faye, she plays a former stick-up artist turned nightclub singer who just lost her job for telling off a rude customer.

After Faye and Johnny stick up a local gangster’s poker room, Faye immediately double-crosses Johnny, takes off with the loot, and soon finds herself pursued by a legendary hitman. Bad turns worse when her car breaks down,wn and she ends up at a decrepit diner where she meets Blanche, a charming waitress with secrets of her own. And when a figure from her past reappears with an offer of easy cash and a clean getaway, Faye thinks she’s found her answer. Of course, things are never that simple…

Supporting Trimbur in the cast include Ghostlight’s Keith Kupferer, indie legend Joe Swanberg, and veteran actress Melora Walters (Boogie Nights, Magnolia).

Throughout the film, Keating pays tribute to the muscular aesthetics of directors like Don Siegel and Samuel Fuller with classic noir lighting and spaghetti-western musical cues to add to the heightened style.

This film follows Keating’s past films, “Invader” (2024),  “Offseason” (2021), “Psychopaths” (2017),  “Carnage Park” (2016), “Darling” (2015), “Pod” (2014), and “Ritual” (2013). Dabbling in horror and sci-fi for most of his directing career, Keating is excited to explore other genres.

“Crooks’ is an incredible opportunity for me to break into the crime movie genre, which I’ve been hoping to do since I started my career,” Keating said in a statement. “This film is a highly stylized celebration of aesthetics ranging from noir to heist to western. I think anyone familiar with my work will see this as a natural progression from my previous films.”

Veronica Barbosa, Eddie Linker, and Gregory Thomas work alongside Keating as producers for this film.

Crooks is currently seeking distribution.
