Independent Film Company has released the official trailer for Idiots, directed by Macon Blair, about two drivers transporting a rich teen to rehab when they become embroiled in a chaotic journey of drugs, crime, and danger.
The film stars Dave Franco, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Mason Thames, Kiernan Shipka, Nicholas Braun, and Peter Dinklage.
Idiots is written, directed, and produced by Macon Blair, best known for directing I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2017, and for his acting roles in films by Jeremy Saulnier, including Blue Ruin and Green Room.
The film, formerly titled The Shitheads, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2026 and is scheduled for release in theaters on August 28, 2026.
In Idiots, two unqualified bozos (Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson Jr. ) are hired to transfer a rich teen (Mason Thames) to rehab when their straightforward gig quickly spirals into dangerous mayhem.
The trailer showcases the film’s blend of absurd comedy, escalating violence, and mismatched buddy dynamics as a routine job quickly devolves into pure chaos.
“It’s a road movie. It’s a comedy. We took inspiration from Midnight Run and The Last Detail, sort of disorganized losers on the road getting into shenanigans. It’s really cast-oriented. It’s full of jokes and crazy situations, but what really holds it together is the ensemble,” said Blair in an interview with IndieWire.
Critics have responded fairly positively to the film, with the review from Next Best Picture highlighting the acting performances, writing, “The trio could not have been cast better. Thames seems to be eating up every moment of playing a stone-cold terror, while Franco and Jackson butt heads and bounce off each other with the misplaced confidence of people who can’t do much right.”
