One of cinema’s most beloved legends is finally getting the documentary treatment they deserve.
Disney+ has announced that a definitive documentary celebrating the extraordinary life and career of Julie Andrews will premiere globally in 2027. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker R.J. Cutler (Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, Martha), the feature promises an intimate portrait of the actress, singer, and cultural icon whose work has inspired audiences for generations.
According to Disney, the documentary will feature rare archival footage, personal photographs, and candid new interviews—including an extensive conversation with Andrews herself. Rather than simply revisiting her greatest hits, the film aims to explore the remarkable resilience, reinvention, and determination that defined both her career and personal life.
For many movie lovers, Julie Andrews remains synonymous with timeless classics such as Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music, while newer generations know her from The Princess Diaries films and as the voice of Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton. Her remarkable ability to connect with audiences across decades has made her one of entertainment’s most enduring stars.
“Julie Andrews is not simply a beloved performer,” said Cutler. “She is a cultural touchstone, a figure woven into the fabric of how generations of people understand joy, resilience and grace. Most people don’t know the extraordinary challenges she’s had to overcome throughout her life, all of which we delve into in this film. To sit with Julie, to be allowed into her inner world, to watch her reflect on a life that has shaped so many other lives was an experience I will forever cherish. She gave us her full self, without armor, without pretense. And what we found was someone even more extraordinary than the icon. I am humbled by her talent, in awe of her strength and honored by her trust.”
Produced by This Machine, a Sony Pictures Television company, the documentary is expected to trace Andrews’ remarkable journey from her early years performing in British vaudeville to becoming one of Hollywood’s most celebrated performers. With unprecedented access to the legendary actress, the project promises to be the most comprehensive screen portrait of her life and legacy to date.
While Disney has yet to reveal the documentary’s official title or exact release date, anticipation is already high. For longtime fans, the film represents a long-overdue celebration of an artist whose grace, talent, and unforgettable performances have left an indelible mark on film history.
The documentary is scheduled to debut worldwide in 2027.
