Ahead of its world premiere in competition at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, the Match Factory has boarded What Remains, the latest feature film from Turkish director Yeşim Ustaoğlu.
Marking the third collaboration between The Match Factory and the director, the film also represents Ustaoğlu’s return to the official selection at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, where she previously won the festival’s Golden Shell for Best Film for her 2008 drama Pandora’s Box.
Match Factory will handle international sales, and MUBI has acquired all rights in Türkiye and will announce release plans for the territory in the coming months.
Here is the synopsis: A poetess breaks out of her suffocating life in order to get back in touch with her inner voice and conscience, questioning accustomed concepts of family and the meaning of life and paving a new path for her family members, as well.
Director Yeşim Ustaoğlu commented, “What Remains is the story of a journey that emerges from a life in which we find ourselves trapped, one where we have almost lost our appetite for life and our creative inspiration. It is a journey that allows us to experience freedom, simplicity, the ability to truly see, hear and touch, and ultimately, the meaning of unconditional love. I embarked on this journey together with Birhan Keskin, Şevket Akıncı, Öykü Karayel, Metin Akdülger, Ali Kayra Kul, and my entire team. I looked, I saw, I listened, I touched… Twenty years after leaving San Sebastián with the Golden Shell for Pandora’s Box, together with the wonderful Tsilla Chelton, it is incredibly exciting to return with a new film. Now it is What Remains’ turn to begin its own journey; to discover the impact it will have on viewers and, finally, to meet its audience in Türkiye.”
What Remains is produced by Ustaoğlu’s production banner, Ustaoglu Film (Turkey), Tarantula (Luxembourg), Cité Films (France), and RFF International (Bulgaria). The film is co-produced by MUBI, as well as Pak Ventures (Turkey) and Yuvision (Turkey), and in collaboration with istos film (Turkey).
The production received official support from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, France’s Cinéma du Monde, the Luxembourg Film Fund, and the Bulgarian National Film Center.
