In Victorian Psycho, the wickedly stylish new horror thriller from director Zachary Wigon, the line between civility and madness is razor-thin.
Based on Virginia Feito’s acclaimed novel, the film follows an eccentric young governess whose arrival at a secluded Victorian estate quickly transforms a stately household into a place of paranoia, violence, and terrifying secrets.
Leading the cast is Maika Monroe in a chilling performance, joined by Jason Isaacs, Thomasin McKenzie, Ruth Wilson, Amy De Bhrún, Jacobi Jupe, and Evie Templeton.
Victorian Psycho made its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, and will open in U.S. theaters on September 25, 2026, via Bleecker Street.
Set in 1858, a young, eccentric governess named Winifred Notty arrives at the remote gothic manor known as Ensor House. As Winifred assimilates into life at Ensor House, staff members begin to inexplicably disappear, and the owners of the estate begin to wonder if something is amiss about their new governess.
Speaking with Cineuropa during the Cannes Film Festival, Zachary Wigon explained the creative philosophy behind the film, saying, “I’m interested in the most intense, fullest expression of psychology and emotion that you can get on screen.”
Reviewing the film for RogerEbert.com, Brian Tallerico gave the film 2 of 4 stars, and wrote that “Victorian Psycho is almost fun enough if you don’t think much about how much more fun it should be. It’s got some inspired bits of horror and comedy, bloodily tied together with a fearless performance from arthouse scream queen Maika Monroe as a sort of Patricia Bateman for the Victorian era.”
